At last! Pigeons!

After a rubbish early spring season, with few birds around, and strangely not decoying, there several large flocks on the A19 south of Selby! One farm I cover was right between 2 of these birds, and has been drilled with beans, so I,m off tomorrow, in the hope of getting this years first good bag....weather permitting!

Well, that was a damp squib! 100 acres of beans drilled, and not a pigeon in 6 days! Something seriously wrong....so I contacted a shooting pal who was a service engineer for a multi-national agricultural machinery manufacturer....he is on very good terms with farmers around the country, and he has spoken to some of them,as well as asking fellow service engineers to do the same.....it,s not like the RSPB Big Bird Day, but it,s good enough for me.....pigeon numbers are DOWN, and seem to have been falling for the last couple of years! Whilst there are still some "hotspots" across the country, overall things don,t look too good! If this really is the case, what has caused the drop in numbers? Any ideas?

I have access to at least 5 fields of beans and peas spread over YO8 and yup pretty much zero pigeon action.

there's a few crows about but this weekend will be spent blasting out carrion crow nests, magpies with the .22 and squirrels in the woods.

got some late sown beans going in this weekend further afield so fingers crossed.

I've come to regard April/May as my DIY/ clay practice/ etc time in lieu of pigeon shooting.
