Shotgun bead with.longer shank

Hi all

The front bead from my Mossberg 500 has been missing since i bought it. The bead is fixed through the rib and into the top of the CLECT choke, originally it would have also have held a plate showing the choke setting (also missing) i have been trying in vain to locate a suitable bead to replace what's missing, that has the suitable 5-40 thread but without success as all the ones i have found locally are too short, and don't extend enough to screw through the rib and into the choke.

So does anyone know if it's possible to get hold of a bead with a longer shank i reckon it needs to be around 7mm..

Thanks

I don't buy beads anymore, have found them to be poor quality. I Tap to 3 or 4mm, depending on the size bead that I want, then put an allen bolt in the Dremel and profile with a small file and emery paper. Cut the thread to the length required and use hex key to install. Simple to make and easy to install/remove (you don't see the hex socket as it is out of your sight line)

That's truly ingenious!

Where do you get your bolts from?

Stainless steel and carbon steel don't go well together. Better with brass to make one.

You can still buy good beads I bought a metric 2.5mm tap from a steam model shop online and re tapped mine to suit. I bought a red fiber optic bead and drilled it out to take a tritium insert for Wildfowling. There are a vast amount of beads available and I'm sure you will get the mossberg one.

Nearly forgot you can get the hi cuz birdbuster fiber optic sight with interchangeable lite pipes they come with various screws to fit most guns.

Problem is the bead is threaded through the rib into the CLECT choke and the hole goes all the way into the barrel. So the rib is held onto the top of the choke by the thread on the bead shank. It's slightly loose at the end without the bead installed (hope that all makes sense) so i need one that is long enough but doesn't protrude into the barrel bore..

It looks like the original hole is wider than it should be so i think it's either a trip to a Smith or down to me to learn how to tap it and replace it.. i have installed a truglo one i had in my spares box with the help of red loctite but ideally want a more permanent repair..

The 'bay carbon/stainless steel, brass, plastic all sorts for pennies, taps too, decent quality 2.5, 3, and 4 mm for around a fiver or sets for around a tenner (google a drill/hole size x tap size chart)

You can buy 5/40 machine screws in various lengths and countersunk panhead etc so could fit the hi viz kit. Or just drill and tap to next metric size up. A unc 5 is 3.175mm so you could tap it out to 3.5mm metric. Iirc electric socket screws are 3.5mm and are easy to get in all sizes.
