Sorry tonker missed your post regarding colchicine i think that you can take more than 12

He only gave me 12, said take four a day and it should clear. finished them but not clear yet. Must admit I think it is a bit easier though. having a bit of an effect on my stomach now, but he said they might.

Well had it a month ago, but the medications was pure magic.   Left the Health Centre at !1: 30 and picked up medication, by 4 : 30 the worst of the pain had gone and within 24 hours no pain whatsoever. The Doctor was more interested in family health history of heart and stroke deaths, hence I had blood tests and a 24 hour blood pressure monitor.  Glad to say all clear, no cholesterol and it 2 weeks since the monitor went back and no word so take it BP was all clear.  A great relief for that but the gout pain itself is intense and my sympathy to fellow sufferers.

Used to get gout regularly, then about 4 - 5 years ago - on the advice of a badly afflicted colleague - I started taking Allopurinol. I began with a pretty regular regime, but these days I miss as many days as I take it. Nonetheless gout is now a thing of the past. There's really no need to suffer from it. Colchacine works up to a point to relieve symptoms, but why suffer the symptoms in the first place?

I couldn’t help but chuckle at the mrs wasn’t helpful when your on all fours going to the toilet.

My poor old Dad once told me that if he could have found the keys to my pistol cabinet while awaiting an ambulance following a heart attack, he would have ended the pain there and then, but a bout of gout he had in both big toes some years later, he considered to be the most pain he had ever been in. The nurse who came to dress his feet said it was the worst case of gout she had ever seen. The medication gave him the runs, but instead of running he had to shuffle across the landing on his bum to get to the bathroom.. Not funny.

Sorry kingsy18  those  medication names go in one ear and out the other, it was a three day programme and I was most impressed with the effect.  I dont normally take any prescribed medication.

The 'three day' thing is almost certainly Colchicine - works well for me, but can upset the stomach.  I keep a few days supply in case it strikes.  Hot weather causes dehydration, which triggers it.  Make sure you drink plenty of water (2 litres fluids a day is recommended for me)

I fell and landed on my knee it keeps swelling up i've had it drained 5 times and 6 cortisone injections , and although there are no crystals in the samples the specialists is treating it as gout as i had a history of it in my toe . She put me on Adenuric 80 mg (febuxostat)and gave me 112 Colchicine to take 2 a day for  3  months  but when i stopped them the knee swelled up again so she gave me another 112 . When i ran out a doctor saw my knee said its a mess and put them on repeat prescription  for me . the specialist says there's now a shape to my knee she wouldn't drain it again but took blood samples to see what was happening , while waiting on the results i went back to my doctors and the doctor said for christ sake stop taking the Colchicine as your only supposed to take it for 3 months you've been on it a year and it killing your insides ive now got liver shunt because of it  and up my pain killers i was on co codamol 30 mg 500mg now hes giving me Paracetamol 500mg Dihydrocodeine  20mg and says you wont see 60 without a new knee

Colchicine as your only supposed to take it for 3 months

My Colchicine says not to take for more than 3 days at 2 x 500 microgrammes per day.  Doc said up to 5 days was OK, but not longer.  I also had to stop taking statin when taking colchicine.

what causes gout ?...........is the type of food ...lifestyle.....just one of those things....genetic....

Any or all of those.  Several in my family have/have had it.  Certain foods tend to bring it on; liver, offal, game, sugary drinks, shellfish, oily fish (mackerel, herring etc), beer, yeast peas, beans but the 'triggers' vary by person.  Shellfish and beer are bad for me.  Also tends to affect people who are heavier more.

When one of the lads at work developed it, the boss ( who is a bit of a health freak ) looked it up, and according to his book there wasn’t a lot that didn’t cause it to be honest.

Hi guys, after a huge course of  of colchicine, issued with 120 tablets which the chemist didn't want to give me , where I had to stop taking now and again for some of the fore mentioned reasons, the attacks subsided. I have been on 200mg of Allopurinol ever since, and although it's never far away I can manage to walk with the rifle again now for a couple, or three miles if i have to and have not had an attack for some time. Doc keeps taking my uric acid levels to make sure its not going back up. If I remember correctly, mine was three times what it should have been. tick up for NHS.

I take Allopurinol for my knee/shoulder/wrist gout but find that a low dose of steroids is needed to remove any fluid in the joints - fluid on the knee will also clear quicker if you keep the joint moving as much as possible - put a tennis ball under your foot when you are sat down relaxing and roll it around. Believe it or not Gin also helps.

Been on allopurinol for 8 yrs now with no further attacks of gout and no side effects from the medication.

Agree with all on here regarding the pain.

Just to add, there are no one off attacks, when you have one there will be more unless you take medication.

I'm on week eleven of my current attack?Marmite started the ball rolling! AVOID Yeast!

I love Marmite and still have a little from time to time - and seem to get away with that.  I also like a glass of beer, and that starts mine, as does shellfish.  It seems different things trigger it for different people.

strange observation here...........i have been suffering from painful joints...for nearly 10 years...put it down to the life i once lived....made sure i had bad reumatism....i woke in pain everyday...headaches at night.....endless rennies....pain in chest.........awful pain in my toe joints........and a lot of other nasty problems........

i have been on a totally gluten free diet for 8 days now.........and every single symptom that i had has gone...most of the pain went in 36hrs...and i havt felt this totally pain free in many years.....

looking at what causes gout and some of gouts symptoms.........maybe there is a connection between gluten intollerance and gout...:hmm:...just a thought

I dont know whats happening still waiting the results of the blood taken on may 23rd by the specialist ive phoned twice. i think she doesnt know what to do if im on the  Colchicine the knees fine no swelling but my insides feel like there on fire , take me off it and i struggle too walk . She said taking a sample would just show its inflamed but surely it would show if its gout or not as there a lack of crystals ?. i was on allopurinol for 30 years but it made me sick and run to the toilet being on it long term
