We want a dog mainly for a family pet, as a good reason to get out and about exercising more, not worried about breed snobbery or further breeding. To be honest, we don't really want to spend £6-700 for a pedigree puppy. We've had Springers and a GSD before but never a Labrador but our recent unfortunate experience has made us wary of an ESS or WCS If a Spanador or Springador would make a sound family pet (child safe?) with the bonus of the possibility it might make a casual working dog that'd be brilliant. scotslad Posted May 3, 2017 Report Share Posted May 3, 2017 To be fair thou i think u have just been really really unlucky and unfortunate to have fostered a dog with issues, any dog/breed can have 'issues'.and even more so when its history is unkown/dodgy Usually in my experience ESS are not very aggressive or 'bitey' dogs.and usually also make very good family pets. Be plenty of pure bred un registered 'pure' labs for sale for 2-300, if u would prefer a pure bred dog, but there is nothing wrong ith springerdors either.. A mate sold some cracking workng lab pups 2 years ago for 300 a pup and all kc registered, health checked etc Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
TaxiDriver Posted May 3, 2017 Author Report Share Posted May 3, 2017 Scotslad : I believe you're right, We've previously had a couple of Springers (together) one of whom was a rescue that was only a week away from being euthanised as it was a nervous cowardly wreck that no one would take on. Both were fabulous family pets, proper outdoor dogs that we'd be out with all day at weekends hence our love of spaniels. We are going to look at these Spanadors as the chap calls them, tomorrow as the wife feels ready and we both feel it will help with the emotional healing. Twistedsanity Posted May 4, 2017 Report Share Posted May 4, 2017 It does amuse me that people happily (or stupidly) pay thousands of pounds for these designer mongrels, cockapoos, laboradoodles and the like but at least it might take the emphasis of the nasty illness and malformations the kennel club are responsible for which can only be a good thing?. We have just paid £800 for a pedigree Gsd who we collect this weekend but she is from imported working bloodlines and is as far away from the kennel club breed standards as you could get, for stupid prices my builder has just got himself a French bulldog puppy and shelled out a whacking £2500! Agree. Nothing wrong with a x breed BUT just coming up with a fancy name does not double the price. As an aside talking about prices. A neighbour just paid £800 for a cocker, sold to her as a show cocker (which she particularly wanted thinking it would be calmer etc) it looks 100% worker to me and as mad as a box of frogs in fact it makes my WCS look sain which believe me takes some doing. I've just paid a deposit against what I think is a fairly priced lab cross puppy that both my wife and I spent over an hour choosing from a litter of 7. Not going to get into the whole cross bred argument, althou personally i wouldn't go out looking for 1, but if the right 'accidental' mating took place of geniune decent working stock that i knoew and the price was right i'd have 1. As yet i never seen a X do anything yet that a well trained dog from its parental breeds won't also do, Xing doesn't make them wonder dogs, but it also doesn't make them rubbish either Whille the 1st bred cross usually benefits from some hybrid vigour and normally doesn't have the inherited diseases in the parent breeds, so generally healthier, ther eis some research to suggest that 2nd gen cross's can be more unhealthy than a pure bred dog. So its swings and roundabouts. Even the whole show vs working (evrn vs FT) is a whole other can of worms, personally evan for a pet i'd almost always have a working bred dog (esp the gun dog breeds, collie might be a good exception thou) as working dogs have been bred with biddability/trainability in mind rather than just there looks. Some show dogs can be bonkers too. My old neighbours bought a show bred pet cocker of the family up the road, a right noisey little thing and there now surprised there dog is noisey?? I wuld hope most working breeders wouldn't have bred from a noisey bitch like that. Really swings and rondabouts again and whenu start generalising about whole breeds/types (althou i still do ) they're will always be good and bad. They're priced I think respectfully at £250 which given the vet checks, feed, worming, flea treatments and anything else, We don't feel is that bad. So long as we get a stable, trainable, proper outdoorsy pet dog (which is largely down to our input) then we'll be made up .
