Introduction to double retrieves and steadiness.

This pup is cracking. She makes training so easy.

This is her first introduction to steadiness and double marks, for me it is always a good sign when there is no need for correction.

This pups a natural.

Might be worth u explaining why u always throw the dummy to the same side etc.for novice trainers

It was the simple wee tricks like that that really helped me after i had been training dogs 'wrong' for years, always got there but just making life hard for myself and creaing futre problems

 

I've always either fancied a golden or flatty too, mibee someday.

Yes I've thought about doing a talk through but I'd naff it up somehow, plus I hate the sound of my own voice. I'll have to try and rehearse before I film or something.

 

The pup in the video is out of my own bitch (echobrook dexster x lowly sapphire) and by my own dog ( holway cider x Alamy Debbie) so that litter was the beginning of "Winbeck Goldies".

I just think that Golden Retrievers are highly underrated and under represented particular by working class lads like me and I'm proud that when people see my dogs work they re-think there opinion, some have even try to deny they are Golden Retrievers and are some other fashionable X to be able to work and train like they do.

I've been lucky enough to train with a few top trainers over the years, but i'd say that clip is as near to a text book example i've seen.

Wot age is the pup?

 

Not really seen that many glodies working, and if i'm honest most have been pretty poor (1 was even pro trained) but so were the owners other dogs, so not the goldies fault..

Like any strange breed/colour, u see 1 poor 1 and there all labelled poor (or even just 1 bad public mistake in a whole day of behaving/working well) while no one even notices a badly behaved black lab or spaniel as that is the norm really

 

1 of the estates i used to pick up on occasional had a handler with quite a few goldies, usually too busy to take time and really watch them. But were very good dogs and actually trialled to a high standard and she often qualifies for the IGL too. I think she has had some COM's in the champ's but i don't really follow that side that much

There's another couple that go to local gundog club are also pretty good too, althou never seen them on game

 

 

Ps, Sorry to steal ur thunder

For more novice teainers, 1 of my many errors with my earlier gundogs/training was just throwing dummies randomly without really thinking about it and wot i was wanting to achieve..

1 very easy tip when u start double retrieves, which Lee does above is to always throw the left hand dummy 1st, as dog will always want to pick the 2nd/last thrown dummy 1st, so by throwing the left 1 (for a dog which heels on the left) ur body is blocking the 2nd dummy to the right which makes pup more likely to pick the 1st dummy.

If that makes sense to u

 

Its a tiny thing but it does make a big difference and set ur pup up for success while still testing it

Not stealing thunder at all Scotslad, you explained it better than I would anyway. I struggle not to go round the houses when I explain something. 👍🏿 The pup is 16 weeks old in the vid, 17weeks old today.
