Schoolboy error, or was it ?

After having previously posted a couple of tips that I use whilst shooting, one of which was to label my cartridge bags with coloured tape, i.e. red for 12, blue for 16 & yellow for 20 bore cartridges, I had a small trip out earlier this week.

Having seen quite a few pigeons on a large field of peas with the part they were feeding on pretty unshootable due to the proximity of a busy road, I decided to try to intersect them as they flew to a small wood to `rest & digest`. My plan was to stand just inside the wood on the side to which, with the wind, the pigeons would approach.

My current domestic situation only allows a few hours out, which in this instance was all that I needed in order to `scratch the itch` of not having been out for quite a few weeks due to a lack of pigeons.

Once in my chosen position and having previously made the error of taking the wrong cartridges for the callibre of gun, I made sure previously of picking up a cartridge bag with a blue i.e. 16 bore tag, suitable for my chosen gun for the day of a 16 bore under/over.

However, whilst they were certainly 16 bore, what I`d picked up was a separate bag I use for duck shooting in season, full of Bismuth cartridges, marked up accordingly on the tag !

I will explain that I have recently sold the guns suitable for steel shot so with my current guns, can only use Bismuth for my occasional duck shooting.

I`m sure that the fact that each shot cost approximately £1 a go directly impacted on my accuracy, as I ended up my short session of 11 pigeons for just 12 shots, a remarkable achievement for an old duffer like me.

Perhaps in future I should `pretend` that I`m shooting with expensive cartridges as it may improve my kills to cartridge ratio considerably.

Just shows that even us old`ns learn a new lesson every day.

Tried using a similar approach 1 bag has reloads,i has steel/bismuth ,1 has pigeon, and a cartridge belt has beasts for foxes and crows. But in the cold light of early morning when the brain hasnt joined the body in being awake its too easy to pick the "wrong"bag .They still go bang but can be a far more expensive day out than planned .
