Game No 7 Shot - What Happened?

Recommended Posts

Apart from the High Pheasant in the little AyA, I've been quite happily shooting my favourite 6.5s in the Maxus. Step son starts shooting, took a liking for the Maxus and as I'm of an age, I let him have it. I decided that I'd be better off lightening things up a tad so picked up a OU which, apart from the barrel layout and 1" in length, matched the spec' of the AyA. First problem is Hull no longer do the High Pheasant in 7s and the second is that the Pro Game 7s don't quite like the OU as much as the AyA so I need something else to try. But - where on earth have they all gone?

wymbers,

you really need to pick up a reloader. you can bang out anything. availability becomes less of an issue.

i know time can be an issue for reloaders, but mancave time is precious.

Right on all counts, but I fear it's too late to start now.

What is really annoying is that father used to reload true 2" crimped loads having made all his own tools which would go up to 2&3/4". When he died, I simply didn't have the time to do it and the centrefire reloading and all I have left now is his scales. Shame.

Had a chat to one member whose advice I've taken and his recommendations together with what I thought might work I've got on order from J Cart's but even they didn't have stock of some so there's a bit of a delay - no problem.

I'd use a good clay cartridge in Italian 71/2 or put an order in for some italian type 7's and be happy using 6.5's

RC prestige 1oz 7.5's fibre are worth looking at maybe?

Or George off here could maybe load you some

Quick look at JustCartridges- Gambore Super Game Hi Bird (28g 7), Hull Imperial Game (28g 7), Eley Impax (28g 7), Grand Prix (30g 7), Express Supreme Game (28g/30g 7), Special Game 28 Fibre (28g 7). I suppose some of these look like high end cartridges but perhaps worth a look?

I've checked the barrel bore/choke and it is nominally 3/4. The High pheasant patterns nicely at 1/2. Imperial Game 28g, Pro Game 30g, Express Supreme 28g and Black Gold 28g (English 7) all pattern between Imp and 1/4. All these are fibre which I'm obliged to use. Just to see what's going on I've several DTL loads in plastic along with some Express Super Game 32g and Special Game fibre 32g on their way. I've got a feeling that in fibre nothing short of 32g is going to work. Whereas these used to be readily available, now for some unfathomable reason in 7s the choice appears to be Hobsons. Will have to see.

You'll never hear me telling you that you should shoot a load lighter than 1 1/8oz in a 12 gauge because I don't see the point as I've said to you in the past.

On the other hand, "work" how?

I realize you might have one of those cranky guns with weird choke geometry that makes life difficult as far as finding a cartridge that will actually print whatever the choke says. I've got a .410 like that - you put in ½ and ¾ and pattern it and then work out the percentages: with most cartridges, the data reads "nominal cylinder, nominal cylinder, nominal cylinder...", etc.

On the other hand, like my .410, that doesn't mean that whatever it will do isn't usable.

If you're getting ½-choke performance with the High Pheasant, why not use that? I mean - if I can take 40-50 yard birds with ¾oz and a 28 gauge shooting an actual ¾-choke pattern, then 33% more shot will more than counter a loss of 5% in the circle. I take it you aren't looking to shoot "skyscraper" birds if you're choosing to use #7's anyway.

I do understand that you want to use what you like and what gives you confidence, but there is so little practical difference between #7, 6½ and #6 that you might as well use whatever gives you the pattern you want and forget about what's in the shell to start with.

Either that or find (or load) the slowest shell with #7 you can get. The problem of failing to achieve the pattern density you think the gun should produce is far more likely to be the fact that you're smashing all the pellets to bits by forcing them out of the gun at 1450fps+ (i.e. "commercial" speeds) and not, in fact, the fibre wad. All of the shells I've loaded use a fibre wad and I've never failed to exceed the nominal pattern density of whatever barrel or choke - but that's because I load to 1250fps and not "as fast as possible".

Very interesting, obviouly backed by many, many years of shooting experience.

One quick point which was mentioned right at the beginning, is that the High Pheasant is no longer made in 7s.

Ill tell you what, a good subsonic 32g #5 and you will never want anything else. Patterns you will die for, with any choke any time at any distance (40y +)

I reckon 50 shells would see you wanting more.

The patterns are to die for.

If you can get hold of them, Eley Superb Fibre 28g No7 are another one to possibly try.

Now that the gun has been Teagued things are looking better and I think I've cracked it. I'm going to try the ones that you last recommended, but I'm minded that they're going to have to go some to out-do their big brother - just need to check that a different shot size to those tried pattern the same. Just have to nip up the motorway to collect a box of each to find out. However, I can probably get the Eleys closer to home so while I'm at it I will try those as well. The pigeon have not been playing ball on the winter barley stubbles - they're all over the place - and then there's the weather which has stopped further harvesting dead so it would be unwise to express an opinion with so few birds shot, but having said that, I have a distinct impression that those Pro Game 7s are going to turn out to be something else and am keeping them for the AyA.

It's just as well I quite enjoy doing the pattern tests as this new gun has been running me ragged until now. However, see the post above and once that is done, I'll have had enough for the time being - it's starting to become a chore now I have to admit. But I'll have a breather and get some shooting in when the combine finally rolls out again. Then, once things quieten down, i'll have a look at those. Fortunately, I have enough High Pheasant left so that I don't have to buy anything immediately.

Edit: Just ran the Eley version through the Infinity Suite - interesting!
