snow white Posted June 10, 2017 Report Share Posted June 10, 2017 Hi lads lassies looking to get a new fly rod tying with the idear of getting a 11 foot rod in stead of the normal 10foot rods i have what would be the advanteg over a 10 foot. Stonepark Posted June 10, 2017 Report Share Posted June 10, 2017 If you are drifting Scottish style the extra length of 11ft or more helps but for punching a line out into a wind or for distance 10ft or even 9ft is advantageous as the line can be better controlled, have a look at what the saltwater guys use as they up the line weight, not the rod length. panoma1 Posted June 10, 2017 Report Share Posted June 10, 2017 A longer rod gives you more line control, an AFTM of 7/8 is fine in my opinion, again the action of the rod is down to personal preference and the type of fishing you do! A long, slow, through action rod is pleasant to use fishing wet fly loch style out of a boat, I tend to use a middle to tip action from the bank, a through action rod subdues a fish better than a tip action rod in my opinion too! Middle to tip action for longer casting from the bank/wading...... just my thoughts! If I had to choose just 1 rod for all round fly fishing, then a 10 foot 7 wt. would get my vote. smiiithy Posted June 19, 2017 Report Share Posted June 19, 2017 My grandad lost an arm down the pit and fished with a metal attachment to hold the rod. It could be heavy to cast all day so he swore by 11ft rods which he seemed to think he could get more line out in less false casts. I inherented the rods when he passed away and they are pretty much all I use for bank or boat fishing. If there is a strong wind I do prefer a stiffer 10' rod (such as a sea trout rod) having once had a barbed hook stuck through my cheek on the first cast of a very windy day. I now carry pliers!
