First gun cartridge recommendations

Recommended Posts

There's no right or wrong answer to this question. It will depend to some degree how much experience you have and how heavily built you are.

The suggestion for a 28gm 7.5 cartridge is very reasonable, that would be a standard choice for many, probably even the majority of clay shooters. However if you're new to shooting they might knock you about a bit with the recoil. Certainly when I started out I found 28gm cartridges uncomfortable to shoot.

So if you're just starting out you might want to start with something that will be a little softer to shoot. Hull Comp X in 21gm 7.5 is a very soft shooting cartridge as are Eley Select either in 21gm or 24gm,

All the choices will break clays if you're on target, it just depends what else you want to factor in.

Whatever is cheapest.

Ive yet to work out what the functional advantage of 28g over 21g is. They cost more and start to get uncomfortable in a long session.

I buy whatever is cheapest but it tends to be 21g, i can shoot those all day from my over under, 28s are fine until about the 125 cartridge point.

Gamebore do a steel 24g which is sometimes available nice and cheap.

I seem to miss just as well with the extra lead, that said ive not tried comparing them at longer range. Do your scores go up increasing the amount of lead?

No idea, haven't shot anything other than 28gm cartridges for quite some time. As I shoot a semi auto the 28gm cartridges are more reliable as far as cycling goes, another point in their favour I suppose.

However, at Sporting Targets, where the charity shoot was held, there was a high tower extreme shooting challenge. Participants were given the option of shooting any weight of cartridge (although shot size was still restricted). That would imply that extra weight/number of shot was of benefit. Pretty logical really, more shot will give some combination of a wider/denser pattern or a longer column of shot. Any of which could improve your hit rate.
