Cartridge choice for this season

Recommended Posts

With this price increase I have managed to dig out enough clay cartridges for this summer and to nearly see me through game season as well. I was thinking that everyone is probably doing the same or picking up as many cheap deals or secondhand cartridges as possible which is bound to hit the cartridge manufacturer pretty hard.

I was wondering what everyone's opinion on Game shooting cartridges will be, are you sticking with the same brand/cartridge or being swayed towards a cheaper alternative? I will hopefully make it through this season but could be caught short looking at the cartridge I usually buy I'll need to be a little conservative.

I'm going to have a go with Express Power Pigeon.

I had thought about using a pigeon cartridge for one of the places I Game shoot as it's fibre only and some fibre seem expensive! I wonder if this is an option somefolk may take. The only thing being is pigeon cartridges by some manufacturers get abit thin on the ground as it get close to game season and their higher priced alternatives become readily available

Probably stay with Fiocchi but after reading on here might try some Gamebore. Will probably reload my own fibre for one syndicate I am in.

Overall , what my sport cost me in days and travel then 4 to 500 cartridges a bit more expensive doesn't make that much difference. NOW, if like some of you guys, I was shooting a thousand a month which I was back in the 70s and 80s then I would be into reloading in a big way.

Cartridge prices never come down even if lead does generally. I herd something about basic clay cartridges possibley getting a price reduction but still prices generally only head up.

On this basis I just buy in when I can afford to and stock pile them. It also means if i was out of work I will have a supply of cartridges I wont need to find money for and will hopefully have saved a few quid on them in the long run.

The only game cartridge I buy is 20bore fibre wad 30gram 6`s (5.5), Gamebore Black gold.

:good:

Starting the season with

Eley impax 6....7 paper case fibre

Mid season RC sipe 32gram 5 plastic case fibre

Taller birds RC sipe 34/36 gram 5 paper case fibre

Cold weather JK6 if plastic wads allowed

For the 20 bore

Sipes 6 shot fibre

My choice cost isn't really a issue as I only use a few thousand a season

it's small in comparison to the bird and travel costs

All the best

No fullchoke only the stone dead carts can do that. Because we all know that say 5shot traveling at 1400fps will shoot and kill differently just because of a name on the case  so a dark storm couldn't kill same as stone dead it can only make the game dead.

What are the Chrono speeds of proper cartridges?

In the past I've shot thousands of George's carts at both game and clays. Can't say that the game was deader than dead or more dead than with dark storms or any other carts I've shot.

Whatever the gunshop has in stock.

I found eley VIPs to work well through the little 20 last season. Wasn't too keen on the black golds, but if that is all they have in stock when I run out, that is what I will have to use.

Dont tend to use the 12b much now (Only take it with me as a spare), but have a few thousand of 12b cartridges in stock if I go back to using one of them as my main gun.
