The authorities won't have a clue who was living in that block. They will know who should have been living there but that part of London has massive pressure on affordable housing. There will be lots of unofficial lodgers, sofa surfing and subletting going on.

The death toll will be very high I fear

Apparently people have been saying its a death trap since it was built in the 70s. In reality it probably should have been knocked down years ago but how could they? There isn't the money to do it, and its not just that block.

The council basically has been chancing it, ignoring the complaints and keeping their fingers crossed hoping nothing happens.

There are plenty of similar high rise blocks dotted around that part of London, now they have a big problem. They won't be able to ignore the issues any more with regard to the other blocks

Annoys me that this kind of thing has to happen for them to act.. People have to loose their lives before issues are addressed.

The thing that I cannot understand is how/why they would clad a building with plastic you can see it melting and falling down I have never seen a fire like that before the whole outside just went up in flames add to that upvc window frames they banned polystyrene tiles for this very reason.

The pore people inside did not stand a chance it reminded me of the twin towers in America.

hello, estimated 300 were living in the tower block, maybe more as vince stated, no fire alarm, just released at least 50 residents taken to hospital

There were 120 flats apparently, its social housing in a high immigrant area, there will be ten or more people sleeping in some of those flats. The tragedy is that people don't get given flats in places like Kensington unless they have kids.

I am about ten miles away and we keep getting an acrid smell like burning plastic wafting on the wind from time to time.

I could smell burning plastic this morning in Croydon.

I do void works for the local council. We remove any polystyrene we find, fit fire doors with int strips and perkos and follow all fire regulations. Communal areas fall under the remit of the FRA officer

I have been watching this tragedy unfold on TV on BBC news interviewer reports have been repeated over many times except the one given early in the morning, when a past tower block committee ex- resident member gave his interview when he stated that after he objected to the plastic cladding was being installed he raised letter and 90% of flat dwellers signed and was sent to the council he then went on to describe how he got a visit from the manager of the team applying the cladding and was threatened by him at the front door of his flat also he said other residents also received threats, I wonder why the interview has not been followed up.

I can only repeat what others have said, terrible.

Some reports are saying no one on the top 3 floors could have survived.

I also don`t see the thinking in people being asked to stay in there flats, I know you don`t want crowding and pushing / free for all in the stair wells but to advise folk to stay put ........

We only live in a end terrace but still we have a full size fire extinguisher in the back of the wardrobe in the bedroom to help us escape should we ever need it, also both smoke and CO2 detectors. Being trapped and waiting for the inevitable must be horrific.

People should look at there own homes and take a moment to assess their property and escape plans.

Thoughts and condolences go to those effected.

Someone needs to start taking in hand the media reporting at the London flat fire....they are way out of order...a fight has broken out as the media forced their way thro a crowd to film someones grief.............

some of the comments in the last 12hrs have been totally crass...........

it just seems that the media needs to take a good look at itself...not only on this disaster but all reporting in general...BBC & Sky are just as bad as each other.............they seen totally devoid of all morals....and education

heard recently on the BBC..."the fire broke out between 12 0'clock and midnight"....................."a young man got all of his family out mostly"....

Totally shocking, the reporter I saw on TV said there was a cry of grief then a free for all as the press fought to get photos of the distressed family.

E. Behr, war photographer summed media attitudes with the title of his autobiography, titled "Anyone here been raped and speaks english" he covered a cental African war in the sixties, a convent had been overun & the nuns all raped, he witnessed an American reporter with a loudspeaker shouting this over the heads of a compound full of traumatised nuns of all ages.
