WinchesterDave
Gotta say I love my little Jimny. A great lamping vehicle for two of us shooting bunny`s from. I use the 4X4 all winter on shoots i go to shooting and beating, also good for getting corn to feeders etc in the winter if your careful. Its a shame it doesn't have a diff lock but still it does me very well. As others have said a 2 am discovery that your stuck is a right PITA especially 40mile from home I wouldn't want to be without my Jimny now or other 4x4. What is good about the small Jimny is they are easier to recover than something heavy like a defender/disco/ L200 pick-up type! ATB Matt They're great vehicles! I really miss mine... ditchman
going through boggy areas, is that when you go see fat sarah trust you to lower the tone.. ...nothing to do with fat sarah...cause she hasnt enuff ground clearance...
rimfire4969
It's the extra clearance I get from the defender that makes a lot of difference. I shoot and feed over loads of cauli fields and those boys leave ruts in ruts.
masmiffy
We have a swb Vitara as a lamping truck and very seldom do we use 4WD but on the odd occasion, in the dark, its a bonus! That being said I knew a keeper whose day vehicle was a Reliant van it went places a lot of land rovers wouldnt!!
wildfowler.250
Thanks for all the replies! Sounds like a lot of folk have a dedicated shooting vehicle. I'm assuming many on here are running 2 cars then? Have wondered about an old banger jimny/vitara and then just use a small hatchback for the bulk of my needs. Downside is that's twice the maintenance, mot's ect. On a slightly different note, the new vitara's look nice and fuel efficient but slow as anything which is disappointing. B391
for a small-ish fuewl efficient and effective AWD, have you considered a Yeti? They are spacious, fuel efficient and awesome off road. Also - low maintenance costs

Which would be an okay compromise.
B391
I have a 16 plate 150 bhp which returns an average of 48 for a complete mix of driving. Right now I am on a ferry taking it over to France.
Twistedsanity
As I understand if it's permanent 4wd it's classed as an awd vehicle, it should.be selectable to call it 4wd
Wooder
use my defender daily so permanent 4wd. when it snows where I live you can be cut off if haven't got 4wd, when shooting in the winter wouldn't get to where I want be with out it! dodeer
Use 2wd most of the time 20k year but recon 4wd on another 3000k or so
B391
Use 2wd most of the time 20k year but recon 4wd on another 3000k or so So that's about 13% 4wd usage. Worth it then and that doesn't include any slippery winter driving etc.

al4x
3k is a lot on a normal vehicle, mine is a few times a week if we have a wet winter. I have toyed with the idea of something smaller but an l200 is ideal for me, dogs and dead things in the back. Pretty comfortable and not too bad fuel wise on the 15k or so I do a year. I would spend half the time foxing with a yeti being towed out as ruts just exclude one for me. Not that the ****** seem to get stuck in Subaru's you'd believe last winter that they would go pretty much anywhere as they certainly seemed to
B391
L200 and the like are very capable vehicles.
Red-dot
ABS fitted to a car in its lifetime actually operates for 0.001% of the cars life but that few seconds will probably save your life, 4X4 less so but can still save your life. Moving to a Discovery 4 or sport soon as I do a lot of road miles and only increasing every year.
Jay_Russell
I drive a discovery 3, it's my only vehicle so its used to commute to work 60 miles a day. My hours are 11am - 7pm so I get plenty of time to get up out shoot for watering feeding pest control as I drive past it to get to work. Best vehicle for me. Comfort on and off road and great ability regardless of terrain. I use about £90 of diesel every 8-10 days. Amazingly I'm getting around 34 mpg which is far better than I hoped for. I am with you there as I see it is is not how often do you use it if you only use it once or twice a year to get you out of the mud it is worth having. Dazza9t9
I've only been shooting for 6 years. Due to the length of my commute I could have a 4x4 as I thought it would cost more than I wanted to spend on fuel Few months ago I though.. sod it. And it just so happened my dad was changing his x trail. So I had it off him. I know it's not a true 4x4, but it's my daily driver. I've got AT tyres for winter months and a pedders lift kit to go on it I have only had it a few months but I am very happy with it. I'm hoping I can develop it into a bit more or a off roader and a shooting bus. One problem I am finding is not many off road parts are made for it. Tbh Xtrails not a hardy off roader, I wrote one off in April. Front suspension components are clearly not designed to take off road abuse.
