That's a terrific finish. On the original post, I'm pretty certain that is a lacquer finish......it's a ****** to remove and not at all like varnish. I took to a Winchester 550 years ago and lived to regret it. I finished it but never again. It needed coats and coats of stain to hide the burnt look. We all learn and thanks for the post. I bought an old 1964 Yeoman recently and had bought the refinish kit and all but when I got it home I thought " hey that looks ok" and left it.
