Wilts#Dave Posted June 18, 2017 Report Share Posted June 18, 2017 After a very lean spell following the drillings, had a cracking day out yesterday, although not the nicest of conditions to shoot in with the heat making it hard work! Shot a patch of laid barley last weekend that was a little disappointing producing only 40 birds, but Dad and I had been watching it again all week and numbers had built up really well on the other smaller field.....first bird came in at 11 o clock and they were still flighting when when we had to pack up at 5 o clock. Cracking day, picked 154 and only lost half a dozen or so. Would have almost certainly topped 200 if we'd stayed on later but that was enough to carry back anyway. I've heard that hot days are no good for pigeon shooting and that colder windy days are more ideal, you just blew that theory out of the water. I remember long hot summers in the late 60s and 70s when we had good days and we earnt our shooting in honest sweat. We also got good shooting after first light and not mid morning onwards as suggested these days. Goes to show we do what works for us on the day. Well done guys. Regarding pigeon shooting in such heat; no-one should doubt that big bags can be made in all weathers. I have had many good days when the weather has been similar to this weekend. I've had so many good days when it's been really hot and sunny with little wind, at this time of year and on stubbles.....what breeze there was, was in our face too but didn't affect how they decoyed. I've never started at first light, usually lunch time onwards this time of year....11 o clock was an early start for us but it paid off this time. Well done on a cracking day Had the hushpower .410 and a beretta 20 bore with us but I started with my auto 12 and the way they were coming in and the distance out the flat bits were I just carried on with that. As you say bags can be made in all weathers, I wouldn't have stuck it out all day if the pigeons hadn't showed up in numbers but you can't turn it down can you. Looking at the height of that crop you done very well only losing a handful of birds .
