Not wanting to get left too far behind the Eminems, WiltsDave plus his father and Agaman and Wilksy, Mightmariner and I thought we had better get out on some laid barley.

Conditions were 'orrible to say the least. When I pulled into the farm yard it was 28 degrees, pretty humid, no wind and there were horse flies about. The sight of 300 pigeons lifting off some laid barley soon had us raring to go. At this stage I must describe my attire. My shorts were taken off and I slipped into something cool - an old boiler suit. This was perfect as it helped to keep the horse flies at bay and kept the barley awns off my body and as it was loose fitting it was the perfect garment. MM was shocked at the end of our session to see me redressing.

The usual discussions took place concerning the siting of the hides and thankfully we agreed that the middle of the field at one end of a very large patch of laid barley was the place to be.

We started off with the rotary, a flapper and two dead birds. Incoming birds did not like this at all and in the first hour we shot 3 pigeons. Many pigeons skirted round us at 90-120m away. Upon instructions I moved the rotary much closer and that did the trick and for the next two hours or so we had very good sport. Not every pigeon we saw decoyed, in fact I would say only a very small percentage came for a look. When we had shot a few and added them to the pattern incoming pigeons decoyed with more confidence.

We shot some long birds and these were the most difficult to pick as it was difficult to mark them exactly. The mat of laid barley meant that dead birds simply fell through the surface layer and disappeared. Needless to say Jasper was not involved in the afternoon's sport.

We shot just over fifty pigeons and made a pretty good fist of picking as many as we could. Lots of them were fly blown.

JDog in a boilers suit that must have been a sight to behold, especially with the flat cap!!!. Well done for braving the extreme weather and shooting, the laid area looks vast and will attract a good number of birds. It's interesting that when I shot on Saturday with a ton of decoys out in the sun I had no fly blow.

I estimate that I drank four litres of water all day yesterday and only had one pee. The photo was taken whilst I returned to my car for more water.

I can beleive you. Not nice dehydration, shows how much the heat can affect oneself, it is what we in the trade would refer to as a negative fluid balance. Less out than in.

Eminem haha, that looks like nice sized patch of laid barley to shoot over JDog! I know how hot it's been shooting on that heat, hard work indeed but the pigeons don't seem to mind. Picking the birds is definitely an art, they sure do fall straight through the barley but that's a good bag and must have made for a fun afternoon!!

Dad and I went out for a go on another field with the smallest little laid patch right in a corner but picked 61....was a pleasure in the cooler conditions.
