Pain relief

Recommended Posts

My old dog was 12 back in January. She has slowed down all of a sudden, well certainly over the past year. She doesn't move as easily as she used to and that is to be expected I suppose. In an effort to try and make her comfortable I did some research on natural products and decided on Aviform Supplex +HA. It had some very good reviews and I was happy that it used human grade ingredients. However, it has had no discernable effect on her, even after 10 weeks of following the guidelines.

We are now considering, against my better judgement, putting her on Metacam or Loxicom, the latter being a relatively new product. Although I know it should be more about her confort, I wouldn't want to put her on these things long term as I feel it leads to other health issues.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Permanent pain relief from the likes of Metacalm or Meloxidyl will lead, eventually, to other issues - probably stomach related, but possibly kidney and liver too. Been there with a lab that was prematurely arthritic after a leg break as a young dog. But the question you've got to ask with a twelve year old dog is whether the long term effects will come into play at a point in the dogs life where the risk outweighs the benefits the medication will give the dog now.

We put the lab I mentioned onto permanent medication when she was about 6 years old, we had to have her PTS when it got the better of her stomach as she approached 11.

Exactly at 12 you have another 2-3 years really unless you are very lucky. Metacam certainly does work really well and an old dog does deserve pain relief rather than trying this and that.

I realise she probably has maybe a couple of years left but it comes sown to quality of life and not quantity.

I also realise that Metacam or Loxicom offer a good level of pain relief but I was genuinely concerned over the potential side effects. I just felt she was worth mire than that.

I've since been looking in to Cartrophen injections and will speak to the vet about these this morning. Again, if anyone has any experience of these then I would very much like to hear of it.

You could try CBD oil capsules. They are good for arthritic pain and are legal as the THC is not present so no highs.

You can buy them on the internet legally in the UK.

I get mine for my arthritis and use the 25% 100mg once a day.It means I have been able to stop taking the ibuprofen which was upsetting my stomach. No known nasty side effects without the thc.
