matgriff Posted June 22, 2017 Report Share Posted June 22, 2017 Hi, I recently bought a very nice low use Winchester 101 XTR, my first shotgun. I've used it for the past 4-5 weeks and fired around 200 cartridges through it, seems to work and suit me fine :-) I have a question about the cartridge extractors/ejectors. From what I read in the user manual, when I open the action after shooting, the empty cartridges are ejected, this seems to work fine. But as I read or understand the manual, if I open the action with un-fired cartridges, they are supposed to be lifted out of the chambers for easy removal ? This doesn't seem to happen on mine, well at least not all the time. Some times when I load the gun, the cartridges drop against the extractors and as I close the action they are lowered down, sometimes it seems that I can just drop the new cartridges straight into the chambers, where they just stop against the natural rim of the chamber against the cartridge brass? So for example, if I break the gun open with un-fired cartridges, then I have to pull them out by lifting them under the brass rim with my finger nails.... they're not a tight fit it's just that I thought the extractors should lift them clear of the chamber ? It seems that the "ejector" function works correctly, but the extractor doesn't ? Smokersmith Posted June 22, 2017 Report Share Posted June 22, 2017 It sounds like they're working correctly to me .... they only rise a little to get your nails underneath. TDS Posted June 22, 2017 Report Share Posted June 22, 2017 Having had many 101s in the past , i can say that the ejector legs should lift unfired cartridges clear of the barrel face for easy extraction.. Remove your ejectors and give them a good clean and light oil , as they may be gummed up with old hardened lubricant.. TDS Posted June 22, 2017 Report Share Posted June 22, 2017 The only other possibility is if part no. 47 in this diagram http://www.midwestgunworks.com/page/mgwi/ctgy/winchester-model-101-factory-parts is sticking/worn and not operating the kickers in the fore end , parts no 19..click on the numbers and it explains what they are As you say the gun is low use so should be negligible wear, i would go with the cleaning and fresh lube of the ejectors first , with a light oil of the ejector kickers..failing that take the stock off and blast the ejector rod guide holes with carb or switch cleaner and then a few drops of light oil.. TDS Posted June 22, 2017 Report Share Posted June 22, 2017 (edited) Yes , that is how they should be , but ,if i am reading this right , matgriffs ejectors intermittently do not raise at all ,staying flush with the barrel face Suggests sticking /binding in the ejector leg channels...if mine i would strip, polish and oil first to see if it makes any differnce Before full assembly i would try the ejector legs back in their channels , they should slide easily and smoothly as they are not spring loaded and under tension... Maybe my mistake :-( The picture in the manual is much exaggerated, they do raise the cartridges out a bit when the gun is opened, but nothing like as shown in the manual picture, more like the photo from holloway..
