I was dragged into my local one last night ( long story, work mates worried about me, their wives in tears etc. )

In the six hours I was there I saw a man attack the security screen, the same people repeatedly asking "how much longer" and the Police called twice.

I heard swearing ( mine ) while a nugget tried to draw blood from a tendon rather than a vein. I had several tests including an x ray and ecg.

All the staff bar one deserve a medal for tolerating such poo in the line of their work.

Yep, last year the wife had to go to A&E at 10:30 on a Saturday night, could not believe the rabble that was in there, one guy banging his fist on the office counter demanding to use their phone so he could call his mom, a young rough looking couple trying to get a can of coke out of the drinks machine without paying (security was called) a drunk demanding to be seen as he had things to-do, I had to bite my tongue.

looking at the people around me most seemed either drunk or on drugs, like you say the staff put up with a fair amount of abuse.

Hope you were ok after your visit?

Last time I was in A&E it took them three days to diagnose a broken pelvis, couldn't work out why I was in so much pain after a relatively minor RTA.

Not got much faith in the NHS although to be fair they did sort it out quickly after that.

Cheers. Vulture

Our A&E had to close. It caused an uproar in the area.Demo's with people protesting blocking the roads outside etc. The Local MP (Labour) and everone else blaming the Goverment amd the usual assumptions being made. It has now reopened with the Local MP making it seemed like he's performed a miracle.

The actual facts are that the Trust never intended to close it. However the Consultant's who worked in it one by left to take up other jobs that pay the same wothout the pain of dealing with the nobs that turn up. Recruitment of replacement doctors/Consultants has beem a mare of a job. Why would anyone want to do it if there are other options which would be more rewarding and less threatening available. They have now got enough to open part time. But it's got nothing to do with what the MP or the protesters have done.

But hey. Fact mean FA nowadays.. A good story will do.. No doubt things will improve when they get the 350 million a week as promised.

I went to a local walk in place after hurting my neck at work. Got put on a backboard and head taped down after suspecting a cracked vertebrae in my neck. Spent eight hours waiting for ambulance to transfer me to the A&E in the end they had to up my case to a blue light as they were getting called out to nose bleeds, the nurses looking after me were not amused. By the time I got there and X-Rayed luckily they found only soft tissue damage I was told by the specialist I'm going to suffer more from my extended time on the backboard.

By and large they do a very good job, but need to get tough on some idiots and scrounges thinking the NHS is a free for all for anything they want.

If you read the side of the bus properly it does not say give 350m to nhs. It said...

Lets fund our NHS. A very good media spin said it was all going to the NHS.

But it's okay because the crack pot labour leader will fund it with his magic beans and money trees.

:sad1: Sad indeed my time spent trying to heal in there is sometimes heartwarming and sometimes dammed well awkward to say the least

But Ive taken the oath and now must deal with intolerance, abuse, and often physical violence.

More magic money from any politition is not the answer..STOP the meddling and let us get on to do the job,we are the ones who know

what we need not the political brigade.Hope you are well and your problem is now found and you are treated... :good::good:

I can honestly say i have always had good service from the NHS and A&E - Admittedly i have had to wait but thats just the way of the world, and have always been dealt with professionaly and with courtesy.

I know a few people who work in A&E - Both front line and admin you will be surprised (probably not actually) at some of the stories

Those that will wait 4 hours for 'a pain i have had for weeks' or for a throat infection or other ailment that may require antibiotics as they will save £8 whatever it is as it will be prescribed from the inbuilt pharmacy for free.

Another one is those that arrive and find out they are diabetic within a few hours of coming to 'visit family' or on holiday, never once had an any symptoms (anywhere you have to pay) and it had just come on.

Long term visitors who are unable or do not know about GPs surgeries and attend A&E as a first point of contact for a cold and the such

These specialist childrens A&Es appear to have numerous children all 'really really ill' or have 'really really hurt themselves' they seem fine when they are playing in the ball pit or on the ipads for the couple of hours wait, but then again it may be the calpol they all seem to go up to the counter and say they were told they would be getting and have been waiting for 10 mins for.

I honestly hate to say it but i think the first thing you should have to provide is a NI card or Number without that a debit or credit card - It seems to work well for most of Europe whos default is to ask for a card swipe for anything other than the initial life saving treatment - they subscribe to the repricorical health care arrangement the same as us but where YOU claim the coffers back from YOUR member state when you return, no running around for them. Also if its not a well known insurance policy by a big company, no dealing direct a card swipe and reclaim when you get home please

NI card and credit card..well if the NHS were to be privatised...LOOK AT the price of rail travel..Gas/Electricity..

whom ever gets the contract will price hike you out of the service.Drugs will be bought as cheaply as possible and less effective.. My fee will be made higher and so more money wasted..

THINK before you wish for something Both myself and my fellow Doctors ALL do a job of work TO HEAL..NOT RICH not POOR

We heal the sick...ALL

There are lots of excellent reasons why persuading people to work A&E is very very difficult.

I enjoy the odd shift to keep my eye in, when the money is right, but could never do it for a career.

Everyone i know who has gone for an A&E training job has a get out plan that does not jnvolve a career in nhs A&E.

Someone i was speaking to last week was on her 10th year in A&E ...... she said she wouldn't have it any other way..... looking at some of the stuff she has to put up with i couldn't do it

Never good at my local a+e. Same thing, drunks, drugs and people kicking off. I only ever go if I need to ie serious head injury or broken bones I can't put in to place myself! Last time I seem to recall a few people being arrested however can't remember too much as I had a run in with a big spring compressor

I had to visit Bradford A & E in the early hours of Sunday morning a few years ago. It was terrible with the aggressive and uncontrollable drunks and junkies, To top it off there was a complete Asian family of about 10 people demanding attention for a baby because it hadn't stopped crying for half an hour. If you shut your eyes you could imagine yourself being in a third world hell hole. I really think Weatherspoons should donate their bouncers to A & E when they close for the night..

Thanks old un. If I'm posting in a year happy days, if not it didn't work ! Not what I wanted the day after my 50th.

The triage nurse is rightly the first person you see in most cases. From what i could tell breathing and bleeding were given priority. Shocked at how many people claimed serious pain yet found the time to pop out for a smoke.

Had to use our A&E recently - twice - and on both occasions excellent treatment and spot on diagnosis. However very very unimpressed with other aspects of NHS including a bizarre situation where my son had to have a chest implant renewed (battery expired) and they forgot to turn generator on!! 6 weeks later and a few damaging seizures (implant controls epilepsy) we discovered truth. Have already got lawyers on the case for another screw-up which nearly killed him so really can't be bothered to take this further but so basic a mistake eh?
