The syndicate shoot that I have been beating for last two seasons have offered me a full gun. I prefer working the dog to shooting but its rude to refuse 😁

Mrs ips fancies working eze when I am shooting (its a stand one beat one job) the question is.....is it a problem / confusing for the dog to have two people working her. She did one drive last year when I was a walking gun and seemed to do ok .

Any thoughts

In my experience, as long as the EXACT same commands, signals and whistle are used, then the dog will not notice any difference. It may just be a slight problem if it knows it can get away with things with 1 handler and not the other. The old proverb, "Give em an inch" etc. etc..

It is all down to the dog really and how tied he/she is to you. I had a viszla for 6 months as a puppy for a friend and he came over every week and took him out, eventually he then had him at his home. That dog was a machine and would happily work for both of us. He just loved work and I had got him responsive to orders in the 6 months. I had another friend who had a nice lab and he tried to have me work his dog but it would be sitting next to him by the time we got half way through the first drive, it wasn't having any of it.

I think as you both live with the dog and obviously both talk to the dog on a daily basis, it should work out fine. Have fun.

Thanks walker.

She doesn't seem to favour either of us really. Different situations / habits she will follow me and sit or lie next to me but other scenarios she gravitates to Lynn. When Lynn was beating a wood last year I was a walking gun, eze kept coming yo the fence to see were I was and would have come to me if she could have got through said fence however once she was happy that I was still around she carried on hunting for Lynn. I don't forsee any problems....gulp. 😁

I work my other halfs lab, he trained her himself and used her on peg while pheasant shooting but when I met him and she was a year old, I wanted to get involved and loved seeing the dogs work. We started picking up on peg with him with me working her to see how she got on, and now we are away from the gun line and in our own 'dedicated' place as one of the picker uppers :) Shes done excellent and does everything I ask, in fact i think she works better for me than him now (ha ha) Picked 16 on one drive last year.

On 1 shoot that I was at, a Guy with a Spaniel only saw it twice in the day. Once, when he let it out of the car and again, when he was putting it back in at the end of the day. The dog seemed to work for all of the other beaters throughout the day !

Ha, I have seen a similar dog, and it wasn't mine 👍

Less confusing for the dog if you use whistle commands in my limited experience with other folk's dogs.

What gets me is when you're in the beating line and everyone wants to give your dog orders. If they know so much how come they haven't got their own dog?
