Fuddster Posted June 24, 2017 Report Share Posted June 24, 2017 (edited) Evening one and all, Not one to often to post in this section, but things are at that quiet stage in the year- and our sport is few and far between. So, to explain the title....I put a call into a pal of mine who keeper's for a small shoot up the A1 from me to see if any of his barley was laid over. The area is in Wharfedale and a rather splendid little corner or North Yorkshire. The call was acted on and contact made with the tenant farmer on one of three farms that make up the shoot. The response was that a farm worker had over egged the spraying and stunted the growth of about 2 acres of barley-resulting in the crows 'blacking out' the damaged area. Now some of my farmers count crows etc in the following 1,2,3,300,800. Up with the larks and started the 65 mile drive to get to the plot-my other permissions are all within 10 miles of home but I wanted to show willing as I have out of season pigeon shooting over the three farms. On site for 9am and yes the farmer can count. There must have been 500 corvids in amongst the barley. The forecast was sunny then overcast so altering my hide from the normal square to a five pointed affair incorporating a roof-to keep the sun off and to hide from the overhead traffic. the corvids came back on a steady flow and provided some good sport-The kit today was my Benelli M2 26 inch barrelled auto with half choke shooting Hull Super Pigeon 32g 6's through half choke. Its the FAC 8 shot model but I tend to load only with five shells. The pattern was facing into the wind with one floater and a flapper. Shot though to 4.30pm and finished up on 70 mixed corvids with a good number of carrion crows-my number one enemy. Just a picture of the hide for your amusement as we all know what a pile of dead crows looks like. Anyhoo, Wife and kids off to daughters dance competition tomorrow and I have a free day. So, tomorrow is another go at the crows-this time its in the Vale of York on a paddock field adjoining the farm where the are robbing cattle feed from the sheds. My lab was in surgery this week to remove a suspect lump from his side-He saw me leave the house in my shooting gear and spent the day in the porch looking out for me to return .I'll be taking tomorrow but cant work him due to his stitches so he can sit the dog box with the back door open. cheers for your time fudds Edited June 24, 2017 by Fuddster Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
