A None Barley Bag

Recommended Posts

With all the mega barley bags being reported it was my intention to create my own but after looking at a good number of my barley fields it was evident that would not be the case. I was aware that Bunny_Blaster was intending to shoot a known flightline over some barley so stayed away but was informed of a field of peas that was getting some action with the pigeons. I went to have a look only to hear shots across the field so I knew it was being shot. So I returned to my permissions to see what was about, During the week I'd received a call informing me that the pigeons were showing some interest in the sown turnips, this happens every year but the farmer was aware that I was still in the country so gave me a call. I stopped at the field at 11.00 and scanned it and counted eighty birds down over the full length of the field so I drove to the farm and had a chat to inform them I was shooting. He was glad as he was concerned that they would move onto his barley over the road. I believe that due to the hot weather the birds were getting moisture from the green leaves. I drove back to the field and watched the position they wanted to be which was along a row of trees. When I passed these trees to set up they exploded with another sixty birds. I set up with two in the magnet close in, three angels and seven on spikes. In the first hour I had twentyseven birds and thought I was in for a mega day but it just tailed off during the midday.

The shooting was challenging as the wind was hard off my back and as the birds flew very low along the the lenght of the field to get to my decoys they hugged the ground then lifted just out of range and then dropped , so the majority of birds shot the lead was below them. The number increased towards the end of the day BB stopped at the gate and saw a few come to the decoys while we had a chat. I finally finished at 19.00 and picked up seventyfive pigeons and four corvids. It was not a megga day but a realy enjoyable shooting day but slow at times. I only had three birds with full crops and that was clover I was expecting them to have barley.

That was a nice few and easy to pick birds on that field.

same here not much hitting the barley but strange how you mention birds containing clover, today (Sunday) I went for a walk around a couple of farms that are within five minutes of home (no gun just my walking stick) the one farm turned a 30 acre field over to grass/clover last year, on walking across it today I must have put 200/300 pigeons off it and there was two strong lines going in and out of the field.

Nice shooting see your doing a Michael Jackson with the glove.

More Keith Lemon and the Bandage.

Seventy Five on one of the less favourably crops at this time of the year is pretty good going P C and to get 20 odd in the first I would imagine they had been going on there for a while without any disturbance .

By the way where is your co partner lately ?

DB has been busy with family matters lately .

With yourself & JDog having good bags on turnips I shall be looking out for some in Herefordshire...I'm always a bit reluctant on the barley. As usual a skilled performance, making the most of an opportunity & by God you have some stamina!A good read once again.
