Side by Side recommendations

I'm on the lookout for a side by side to do some rough shooting (and the occasional clay shoot thrown in for good measure).

I would prefer a single trigger with semi/pistol grip. Multi choke would be nice but could live without.

With a budget of about a grand give or take I've been thinking about Yildiz for a new gun or possibly a Winchester 23.

Can anyone here give an opinion on those or throw in some other suggestions?

I think it would be better both money wise and handling to go for a good English sxs with 2.3/4 inch chambers .

But failing that, AYA. Unless you're dead against it, double triggers can save a lot of hassle as singles can play up and can be a devil to sort out if they do.

Provided you forget the single trigger, anything by AyA or Arrietta. Also there is superb value to be had in a basic English boxlock non ejector. I believe AyA No 2 was the best selling s/s model for some years.

Although single triggers have reached a state of very satisfactory reliability on most o/u guns, the s/s market has never really taken embraced the single trigger - and so - although examples are available, they aren't always perfected ..........

Double triggers are so easy to get used to - I personally would not consider a single trigger as an important choise driver, but appreciate others may have different views.

I've just written (posts crossed) a remarkably similar post!

I've heard this before.

Is it because of the way the action is configured compared to an O/U?

I'm not certain - ie, I don't know - but would well imagine that that is the case. If you can accept double triggers, you could just go another couple of miles. Do you really need ejectors? - I haven't in some 50 years. With the range of game cartridges available, there's still a good choice in 2 & 1/2" chamber versions - you might want to consider what's readily available for clays, though. Put that lot together and you're looking at what very few want. Consequently, with your funds available, you could well get something English and rather tasty which you'd probably never wish to sell.

Look for zabala berri- lux. Pistol grip, single trigger, multi choke, beaver tail forend. mine has case hardened action. The chokes look very much like Beretta mobils. Just superb tool. Had mine a few years now . It was £550 new. There is one on guntrader at the mo.

I think there are two reasons;

Firstly, the English s/s guns with single triggers were relatively uncommon - and all had their own mysterious patent triggers, all made in low numbers by highly skilled craftsmen and carefully individually 'tweaked' - and over the years sometimes less skilled repairers have been at them ......

Secondly, some overseas makers (notably the Americans and Italians) did make s/s guns with decent single triggers, but the Spanish never really seemed to get them 100% right ..... and demand has been quite limited as they always cost additional money

It's like riding a bike. I shoot both single and double trigger shotguns and never ever have to think about it. I would certainly look around for a nice English s/s first choice, or an AYA. I still have my grandfathers BSA non ejector 12 gauge which he paid 7 guineas for (£7..35p) and I still take it out occasionally just for old times sake.

Yes I found a fabarm beta lux but it's a double trigger, as I prefer the instant choke choice and as said above more reliable on a sxs, it's multi choke steel proof 3" chamber 29 1/2" barrel, semi pistol grip, and I love it! All that said I love my English sxs but it's 2 1/2" chambers, so not for every day hide work, clays etc,

There is a Fabarm Beta single trigger for sale at George Gibbs Ltd.

AYA no.3 is one of the nicest guns I own but it's double trigger fixed choke non ejector.. If you can overcome that I think you'll find something along the same lines a fantastic gun. Many guns come and go for me over the years but this one will be with me forever.

Is it just me or is a SxS with a pistol grip, single trigger and multi chokes a bit like a Ford Model T with power steering, Sat Nav and Aircon?? Buy an English made sidelock that was actually made by the name on the barrel, don't get hung up on chokes too much and enjoy it for what it is.
