Pigeons moderately safe today

Got to my permission about eleven today, passed one stubble on the way all the rest still standing. Up one track to where i can usually get against a small wood and get a few shots but on getting to the end I could see three labourers cutting leeks in a strip adjacent to the wood where i wanted to be, so no go. Back down the track and over through the farm onto standing barley. I sat for ten minutes and spotted a trickle of pigeons coming over a smallholding on the border of my perm then coming low over a huge field of spuds then over another hedge across the barley and into the middle of what looked like a very small lay in the barley.I decided i would get my gear, I opened vehicle, gun, carts, net, no poles. Arrrrgghhhh What a fool! I then recall I had left them on the garage floor. I had been down to this ground several times of late hoping for some laid barley but none previously.

I stuffed myself into the hedge and made a makeshift hide with the net but was nowhere near ideal. The piggies came on a stiff breeze in two's and three's and I shot bleddy awful as usual, actually if i am honest worse than ever, I missed loads of slowies and struggled to hit the fasties. I killed seventeen and easily used 60-70 carts. I managed to pick only two and the rest had gone into the standing crop which i hate but said farmer would not be happy if they were left to damage more crop. Many of the birds i shot at were going away from me as i was directly under the flightline, some came as crossers, some high and some low. I put that much lead up in the air i thought it would weigh the clouds down  I alway pick my carts and one upside was my bag had become very light.

Need to get out more with the shotty and less with the rifle. Myself only to blame and felt like i was aiming instead of pointing and stopping on the swing through.

Undoubtedly mostly all of the pw fraternity would have faired better than I, that said still very enjoyable day.

Back out Monday or Tuesday, maybe both.

I found that birds flying away and above are very rarely dropped unless very close .i think that the shot up the jacksie isnt a killing shot .and it can also ruin the breast meat as the guts are hit hard and that leaks into places i dont want it ,at butchery time .

That was part of my frustration many of the birds going away from me were very close and shots were complete misses. Would not attempt a high bird going directly away from me, have learnt that in the past years.

That was still a good day IMO and hopefully can only get better.

I am still waiting for the barley to be cut (imminent) on my permissions and can't wait to get a few shots off..

Will not be long now Gs, next 14 days everything should be off on my perms

i think everyone has days like this. i started shooting about 6 years ago and up till around a year ago most of my days were similar , still struggle with going away birds. as long as you have had a good day and made some noise i think everyone concerned should be happy. i found the trick is not to get frustrated it makes u think about the shot to much.
