panoma1
Hi lads I am tying my own trout fishing flies and looking for starling wings i have looked all over internet cant find any can somebody point me in the right direction. I know they are protected so are a lot of other birds but you still get wings and capes so why not starling. Thanks for looking tony I understand they are protected in the UK, I imagine they are wings from a non protected species harvested and imported from abroad? A specialist company dealing in fly tying materials would surely be able to advise?
snow white
Hi Bobba i have tried troutcatchers they all sell full capes only want wings. Thank you.
Uilleachan
It's hard to find just the wings, a complete bird is the norm for Starling. An example here: http://www.flyonlyonline.co.uk/starling-skin.html Most fishing shops with a fly tying section should have a Starling skin. Priced around £8 to £12. The body feathers are just the job for soft feather wets such as the Stuart's Black Spider.

Bobba
Hi Bobba i have tried troutcatchers they all sell full capes only want wings. Thank you. From the look of things it seems like you'll have to buy a full cape. Look on the bright side, the price differential between wings (should you find some) and a cape is probably negligible and as has been said, the body feathers are useable too. Out of curiosity what patterns are you tying with the wing feathers? (I also fly tie - although I understand that upmarket nobs call it fly dressing!) Walker570
Try Harvey Angling. I will have a look through my huge collection of fur and feathers and see if I can find some. I assume you want a matched pair for winging dry flies ?

Vince Green
We used to sell hundreds of starling wings to Veniards of Croydon years ago. I believe they are still in business. Funny how times change, now they are protected, when I was a kid they called them flying rats Edited July 23, 2017 by Vince Green
Walker570
No, ben through two boxes of wings and things and not a single starling wing there. Been years since I winged dry flies that way. Nice if your trying to re create an old pattern, but to be honest over the last 60yrs I really do not think the trout know the difference. bumpy22
check up on this but i am sure farms with problems can have special license to control starlings. if you can find this it may be a source for your wings
