223/5.56

Recommended Posts

Yes it's marked as .223...

it was sold as 223 and says 223 but why 5.56 ??? Strange, none of the other boxs I bought had 5.56 on them hornady, federal. Thought I'd ask and play it safe.

Thank you

5.56 is the military spec'.

Thought 5.56 was not a good idea to put through 223

Because of military spec ammunition pressures etc ???

5.56mm is the military designation for .223, your FAC should automatically have comeback reading .223/5.56mm as the approved calibre when you applied.

5.56 surplus ammo is usually very much cheaper. There has been some discussion about pressures but everybody I know runs military surplus ammo through their .223s without any problems. Barnaul is very popular.

These are .223, there is an argument you can use .223 in a 5.56, but best not to try the other way round.

Just the same, I feed ALL my guns what is stamped on the barrel.

I tried these many years ago in my .223 T3 Lite, I was not impressed, hardly any better than Wolf!

if you look up ^^^ there is sticky at the top of this section on the subject.

But as we all know the first rule of Forums is "no one ever read stickies" :)

I had a look but the links are not working, think they may need updating ???

But to be fair I was asking about this certain box of ammo.

So second rule of forum no one ever reads the original post lol

Thanks for the input though

  • 2 months later...

I bought a load of these (55 grain) for zeroing my scope, before fine tuning with my home loads.

They are fine for the 223, though not the most accurate.

The latest boxes I have purchased state they are made for bolt action rifles.

My CZ 527 wont handle the 62 grain cartridges that are shown in the picture as I don`t have the twist rate needed.
