Skips Annealing Machine

Went onto youtube to see how this was made and decided to have a go myself.

First made a box out of some old chipboard-

Drilled out the holes-

And made the drum out of a 6" cake tin-

This later turned out to be the wrong size as Skip had made it smaller in his finished annealer.

As you can see I had to move the hole over for the motors due to the drum being bigger-

Fitted the drum-

And the speed controllers-

Then the power pack-

Fitted spacer onto the front of the box-

This was a bit tricky as I had to machine this out of some plastic rod-

Turned out nice-

Fitted guides and sorted out gaps etc-

And finally made a holder for the blowtorch-

Great job! Thanks for sharing. Just watched a YouTube video of the original in action and am impressed. A triumph of design.

How much has the project cost please?

The wood and bits of steel I already had and the power controller, speed controllers and the motors worked out to @ £30 whilst the plastic was @ £10; all off evilbay. The cake tin was @ £6 but I bought that online and I'm sure I could have gotten it cheaper but..........

There isn't much to go wrong and it should last for years.

That's pretty good value even allowing for your labour when compared to the price of ready made manufacturers machines. As you say, should last a lifetime. Plus it's got to be a more scientific method than a blowtorch even with Templac. :good:

The only real problem with skips design is the limitation of cartridge sizes it accepts. If you shoot everything from 17hornet to 45\70 your going to need several of them. A turntable based design is more versatile and just as easy to build, the only drawback is a lack of a hopper so it can't be left unattended.

There was a thread on here, if you search annealers. A chap we know as old_no7 helpfully posted some plans, which I followed and slightly tweaked but ultimately the same design, which could be altered to just use a variable resistor and motor to control the speed.

Another bloke in Bulgaria makes these very simple versions without timer and feedback and sells them on other forums for around £250.
