Leaves

Recommended Posts

I hate them at this time of year. I have filled up a (full size) skip yet the garden is still covered in them and there are still just as many waiting to come off the trees. What do other PW's do with them?

I tend to put them on railway lines then have a good laugh at the Daily Mail headlines the following day.

I think I have a lots of the 'wrong type' of leaves.

collect them up on he dryest days and burn,

This. I have maintenance contracts for a few sizable gaffs/manor houses, smallest garden being 3/4 acre, we burn as much as we can. Remaining wet stuff gets composted.

Get a micro anaerobic digester plant and from your organic waste you can produce bio-gas to cook with and a liquid/sludge fertiliser for the garden. Go a bit further and you could produce electricity from the gas to feed the Tesla.

Or you could save yourself lots of hassle and burn and mulch them.

My neighbour takes mine (after I have collected them into the big builders gravel bags) and makes compost. I usually get about 5 to 10 big bags well compacted. If I'm lucky, and the wind comes at the right time, a lot blow away, but last year they all had to be collected.

The worst offender is a huger sycamore and I have tried to get permission from the council to have it down as if it blows down, it will demolish the house and likely kill someone (probably me!), but they won't give permission. My neighbour would also like it down and supported my application, but to no avail.

I quite enjoy raking the leaves on a sunny day or frosty one, then pretend your not looking while the kids trash your piles of leaves, bring it on, which reminds me I need a new rake!!

If you have a mower with a horizontal blades, run it over the leaves. The leaves get shredded and collected by the mower. They compost well like that. Or you can just bag them and get rid down the amenity tip in the compost skip.

Pile and burn them, put damp leaves on top and they steam and dry as the heat travels up burning them too. They tend to smoulder for a few hours rather than blaze away unless crispy dry.

hello, i often wonder who s idea for councils to pay people to blow leaves from here to there and there to here and then pay the drain men to unblock 1000s of road side drains or not as from what i see here and on tv the roads flood every where the leaves have been blown

Cleared a heap up earlier in the week, noticed today that another load have made an appearance..

Me too. I did Thursday and today. Will also be out tomorrow. The worst part is my gravel drive. I inevitably end up losing half the gravel regardless of how carefully I rake.

Get a blower,

Oh I have. I just haven't mastered how to control the direction of the leaves. I just end up moving the leaves from place to place.
