Carpet Fitting Price Help Needed PLEASE

Evening all , What would you consider a fair price to fit a carpet into what will be an empty room with a chimney breast , the room is 17ft 6ins x 14ft , there is decent grip all the way round and if needed , I can lay the underlay and put the trim in the one doorway .

Yesterday I went in Carpetright at Lowertoft for a quote on a carpet we liked that was on offer , the salesman said if we bought the underlay as well then it would be free fitting , knowing nothing is free in this day and age I let him quote for both and I would give it a thought , well after he tried to sell me grips ect I told him it didn't need any grips and to keep the price down I would do all the clearing up after it was fitted so just give me your cheapest quote . well after him telling me this is the best he could do the price included , 29.99 delivery , £224 for underlay , £134 for fitting , £10 to remove any off cuts plus the price of the carpet , as we were buying the underlay the fitting price was removed and as a good will jester he removed the off cuts bill.

Today I went in our Yarmouth branch to just order the carpet and to tell them there quote was far to dear , the chap said he will try and make it cheaper , after he took a £1 a mitre of the underlay and a tenner off the delivery I told he was wasting his and my time and just order the carpet .

So all I want off you wise people is what would be a fair price to get a carpet fitter to just fit the carpet , by the way I have just ordered online 25mitres of Tredaire Dreamwalk 11mm underlay , free delivery for £87 , quite a saving on Carpetright price .

Don't use carpet right mate, their mark up is rediculous. Use a high street specialist or a mobile one as they will have far greater quality carpets for half the price of carpet right. I fit my own carpets and underlay and I get my underlay from the internet direct from the warehouse at a 3rd or what carpet right charge. You can also get good quality carpets from the net at a great price, then head to a trade recommendation webpage and put your job in and then the carpet fitters in your area will be able to quote for the job. But if your gripper is in good nick and you do the underlay and door bar then I'd say 80-100 is about right.

Buy yourself a knee kicker, use the existing carpet as a template, and have a bash at it yourself if the quotes are all ridiculous.

I would have done a few years ago Dan , but at 70 years old, I think the knee kicker would put paid to what little life I have still got in my knees , but thanks for replying .

Had mine done a couple of months ago, 5mx4.2, I laid underlay he just laid carpet, Took him about 30mins £45. Then he came back and did stairs and landing fit only £70.

I would had been very happy paying that sort of money Chris , did you join the underlay together ? , or just left it loose ?

I went round the carpet shops and chose what I wanted, then looked on line and got it a lot cheaper, I think it was something like Allied weavers Invictus or Pegasus, £24 something from SCS £17 online with free delivery.

I liked your way of thinking Chris , you can look round the carpet shop for choice , quality , colour and the quote and then sit at home with a nice cup of tea and see if you can beat the quote , which by the sound of it , you succeeded , top man.

Just remember if everyone did that there would be no carpet shops to go look at after a while.

You are right Tom and I fully agree with what your saying , but we have to accept that shopping on the internet is here to stay , I go out my way to shop local and in our local Carpetright window they state we will match any price , when I told them the price I could get the underlay for which matched the one they tried to sell me , they took £1 a metre off from £8.99 to £7.99 , still making it about £200 plus £29.99 for delivery , whereas Online Carpets for the same if not better quality was £87.00 with free delivery , which by the way is now in my garage and only took two days to arrive from after I ordered it , while the carpet I ordered two days earlier from Carpetright is not here yet and when it do come I have got to pay £29.99 for them to bring it less than two miles .

So you can understand why people shop online .

ex fitter here. when I was on it we would charge £3.50 a meter and that included fitting of underlay, grippers, doorbars (doorbars not included) removal and replacement of furniture and the fitting. this delivery lark is a load of tosh. don't know how they can justify that as all decent fitters would bring it straight from the shop.

we were expensive compared to others but our competing fitters worked for carpet right and they had lousy reps.

it wasn't really their fault, just they would book jobs in for their fitters and not pass it down the line. customers would wait months in some cases.

want my advice - buy it all online, get a independant fitter and ask if his price includes picking the carpet up. and most fitters no matter how small the job charge a minimum of £50. remember as a fitter one cock up could cost me hundreds to replace a carpet especially if you buy a nice wool at £20+ a square meter
