Confession time - whilst sampling various Porter Ales () I had to make up 4 bottles on one occasion and tried Old Crafty Hen.....OMG it's superb, but it gets better cos Hens Teeth ,turns out, is even nicer. For years I have passed these Ales by without realising just how good they really are.

Porter was originally all the dregs from the beer sold the night before put into a bucket and sold very cheaply to the porters who worked at Smithfield meat market, hence the name.

In all other bars ‘happy hour’!?

Incorrect, as far as i'm aware - The dregs and drip trays went to form mild in an empty barrel given a shake and with the addition of a bar of settling soap. Left for two days and then tapped

Although not technically a porter it's a "old English ale" theakson's old puculier takes some beating.

There are lots of nice darker ales I'm not sure if it's still on but manchester winter beer festival had loads. I would recommend trying local breweries as they may so one, if not it's not a wasted trip as the other beers are probably good (only one way to find out).
