I'm NGO, but I often wonder what would happen if everyone just took out public liability insurance and we had no funding of shooting organisations.

Good question. I’m not really sure. Any organisation is only as good as its members. Following the last threat to shooting when Bird went on the rampage with ‘sporting’ firearms’, even when urged to lobby the relevant departments, just over 1% could be bothered.

Mom with the NGO because I genuinely believe our shooting organisations are mostly ineffectual. The ‘lead shot’ issue was however, very well fought eventually, and I was particularly impressed by the articulate and persuasive manner in which the former CA spokesman put forward our case and the facts regarding it.

If I was going to join any organisation I think it would be the CA, but am quite loathe to leave the NGO, so maybe sometime.

I’m only with BASC because it comes with my shooting club membership.

Myself and several others I have read of have been advised by them to “just go along” with silly conditions made up by FEO’s which aren’t part of the HO guidelines or legislation.

There are many things I feel they should challenge but they just don’t seem to... why not?

The recent thread on here about FEO’s saying land is cleared for 222 cal but not 223 shows some of th silly things they come out with.

I think OP you’ve missed the point of shooting organisation it’s not to give you cheap insurance they give you free insurance with membership whilst representing their members and supporting them.

If you want just insurance CCC is fine but don’t expect legal advice discounts on course and purchases or a larger voice on public matters.

Non of the organisation are perfect but one will be out there to suit and support you.

This is just one of a few reasons why I left BASC. I don’t feel any organisation is doing it’s job unless they are a constant pain in the **** of biased or unreasonable/unnecessary authority.

I don’t believe any UK organisations are proactive enough by a long way, with some being downright indifferent or lethargic. The CPSA’s comment (  an organisation of which I was once a member ) to a member enquiring of GP’s letters was asked ‘well how much do you want a license?’ being a perfect example of either.

Of course I realise the NGO aren’t as influential as some others, but for an organisation comprising of part time unsalaried reps it punches way above its weight.

Thrre are many out there; just choose the one which you feel represents your interests best.

It isn’t even necessary to join any; you can buy insurance only, but I would gladly pay more than double the most expensive one to an organisation which showed itself to have serious sphericals.
