getthegat
Hi, so having wished I'd done more homework before going ahead with a new kitchen and asked for advice from the many pw experts, I'm wondering if anyone has used Polyflor or Karndean and if there is anyone on here that fits the above mentioned and is in the Essex area? The Polyflor is the least expensive and the company has been going since 1915! Also they do a lot of commercial products and it is environmentaly friendly apparently. We are having any dodgy floor boards replaced and a layer of 6mm ply as a base.
team tractor
I think it’s polyfloor I’ve got and it’s superb in my bathroom . We have it fitted lots in our kitchens we sell.

GingerCat
Parents have had karndeen for a good 12 years and it looks as good as new. They have a wood effect and also a tiled one. Both are lovely and recieve lots of foot traffic, dogs, grand kids etc every day. ala friend has it also and again its excellent. Not seen the other so can't comment. strimmer_13
Sounds like your getting the floor sorted, remember to fix the ply really well, sink the heads and fill all joins and screw heads with a decent filler. No point paying for the best if a shoddy job is hidden as it will show every bump. Sorry if it sounds like I'm teaching you to suck eggs. Ive never fitted either (use to be a carpet fitter) but my bud at the time was a karndean specialist and he said it's hard to fit (being polite) and too much for home use. Mainly commercial use. But both are extremely hard wearing and not all homes are the same. All said and done tho id go for polyfloor as it's just as good but cheaper. besty57
Not karndean.but I have amtico in my bathroom been down 2 years now, still looks as good as new,I would get a proper fitter to lay it,
Alex C
had Karndean in our last house. Brilliant stuff. Make sure you get a good installer as it makes all the difference
getthegat
The ply is down, looks very good, screws in deep, no gaps, no squeaky floor boards, feels warmer already. Need a good Polyflor fitter now.
Mungler
I bought 7 tonnes of assorted styles of amtico from a industrial liquidator. It’s the most sensible thing you can put on a floor. Karndean is the next best for a lot less. How big is the area and what style are you looking at eg dark oak, light slate etc
getthegat
We are thinking about Polyflor Colonial Mountain Alder, but haven't seen it in the flesh yet. Was going to go to Grays on Sunday to a floor shop.
figgy
I had a lot of Karndean around 12 or 13 years ago throughout a house and some was very good some was poor and shrank in areas of high sunlight. Some the textured surface wore away in a short time on slate effect floor and the lighter coloured wood look floor scratched with any grit in your shoes or dogs claws showing dark lines when washed over. Things will have moved on a lot in that time but it put me off. Not cheap either, I’d rather go for a tiled floor or stone floor.
getthegat
Good advice, unfortunately we live in a 3rd floor maisonette, weight of tiles or stone is not an option. Will certainly ask about sunlight damage, as our lounge has huge windows.
figgy
It will be a lot more uv light and heat stable now than it was years ago. Not all of ours was affected just certain light wood effect ones. Sales people will tell you it’s the best thing since sliced bread no matter what there selling you. Have a read online at what people’s opinions are, I know lots of people very happy with there’s others not happy with amtico so you takes your chance. smokingdragon
We've had Polyfloor down in our living room for a few years and its brilliant. I've got 3 dogs and its survived their many tests! If laying onto concrete, they will want to put a laytex floor levelling compound on first, so that it very smooth and as a good surface for the adhesive. you can get it on Ebay for half the price some shops try and sell it for, but get a proper fitter. Laird Lugton
Had Karndean down for 11 years and it is excellent. In one area next to a wall the house has settled (it was a new build) or the Karndean has shrunk but only by a few millimetres and only noticeable when the wife is making me scrub the floors Edited April 1, 2018 by Laird Lugton
strimmer_13
the latex mix flooring compound is top stuff even the cheaper versions. On ebay for roughly £15 for 20kg bag and 4ltrs of mix. They reckon 5sq mtr but it will do more if your floor isn't that bad. It's actually a easy job and quick drying. All we used to use is a cheap plasters trowel and graphite sanding bricks. Afternoons work by which I mean 20mins laying, 1 hour waiting for it to dry and 20 mins sanding. After 2 runs we never needed to put any more down. Save a few quid do it yourself
vampire
I wouldn't want to be a karndean fitter, would drive me mad but looks good.
getthegat
After all the great advice and comments I think I have this covered (excuse the pun) now. Got a relative buying the Polyflor at trade for us and the guy who laid the ply and put on the new skirting ( great job) has introduced us to a vinyl floor fitter, so looking forward to a finished lounge and kitchen in the near future.
