As stated its a killer , warning says keep them out of mud hard to do there's mud everywhere .At the end of the walk put him in the river .When I get home wash his feet in clean Water.Hope this is enough.Dipper. Yellow Bear Posted March 30, 2018 Report Share Posted March 30, 2018 According to the Vet interviewed on Breakfast tv the other morning it is not infectious dog/dog but they do not know the root cause, as there have been cases of one dog in a group having the disease without infecting others with close contact. The confirmed numbers are not high and the consensus is that woodland areas with standing/stagnant water are a high risk common factor. loriusgarrulus Posted March 30, 2018 Report Share Posted March 30, 2018 As there have only been 135 confirmed cases in 6 years it is not a major dog killer. That is only around 22 dogs a year. The cause is not known and by the time the symptoms show its rarely successful in treating it. Its worth washing mud off dogs and possibly avoiding areas where there have been known cases. More dogs die from parvo each year due to not vaccinating them than alabama rot. It could be something as simple as a particular dog having a weak immune system and a type of anearobic bacteria in wet mud getting in a cut or scrape and that setting up something causing organ failure etc. This could explain why one dog goes down with it and another walked in the same area doesn't, but its all guess work at the moment. Another problem in finding the cause is not all dogs suspected of dying from it are going to have a full autopsy with blood and tissue screening.
