Range Rover v Discovery

So if you take the 2 vehicles say both 11 plate with Diesel engines what's the difference apart from looks. I have had a Range Rover sport before which to be honest was a money pit. Is the discovery better than a vogue, is the suspension the same set up, are they both as bad as each other. You do see a lot of discoveries about which is why I ask and I may be in the market for some luxury soon.

Personally I would look at a Freelander 2.  Very competant, but can only tow 2000kg

Much cheaper to run and very reliable,  I would look for a 190bhp SD4 auto.   Had 3 of them and prefer them to previous RR's and Discovery's

They are all bad . Just look at the most reliable list  they are all at the bottom . I speak from Experiance . Terrible cars.

So what's out there in the luxury market that's not a Land Rover that's got a good reputation. Toyota landcrusers now are all most lottery money to buy now.

I have a 170BHP 15 Plate Yeti DSG Elegance, had 3 Discos before this and prefer the Skoda.  Not as hard core off road obviously buy very competent, very well put together a great drive and very good on Fuel.  Nothing not to like unless you need loads of space.

I have had discoveries and range rovers for the last 20 years and I must have been lucky as mine have been pretty reliable. Had the discoveries more recently as liked the 7 seats.

Prefer my Telsa now though ?

Mmmmm, it would seem there are plenty of 'lucky' owners around here too. ?

I do all ready have the last model defender and that is a bit of a barn queen. I have looked at what's been suggested but there's no fool like an old fool I guess so I think it's still Td V8 vogue. I never wanted to leave the children any inheritance any way.

Thanks

Find a small local specialist for servicing and avoid main dealers like the plague - speak to any RR owner you meet for info on the best ones. Get them to do a couple of small jobs then pay cash (:whistling:) for any work carried out in the future. Supply any parts needed yourself - Opie Oils is good for most service parts but you can buy the vast majority of bits far cheaper yourself if you search around ( a service sheet for my car shows that the previous owner was charged £25 per Spark Plug by a main dealer - Ebay price is £49 for all 8), other main dealer charges are criminal - I had to pay £600 for an XYZ switch only to read on the Full Fat RR forum that there's a chap rebuilds them for £60! These are champagne cars but if you shop around and use a little savvy then they are no worse than any other car - but a whole lot better driving experience.

That sounds like good advice.

Thanks

Best advice really, chris, is to suggest that you drive one - mine is pretty old and slow by modern standards but the comfort and drive are like nothing else, don't expect it to be economical on fuel though - if you see 20+/gallon then you are winning but it doesn't actually seem to bother me - strange, these really are Marmite vehicles.

Your right , I have had older ones in the past but after a few years with out one I find my self looking again. I know you can get stung with them especially at mot time but I run a defender as well so I am used to spending time under a vehicle gettIng high on oil leaks.

Thanks

This is good advice...I never use main dealers; all the local lads I use are mostly landrover owners and know their stuff.

I had a Disco 3 for a very short time (Don't ask!!).  They are like no other car, and if my wife would let me, I'd have another tomorrow!

I find myself trying to find something that can replace it, but I can't, there is nothing quite like it.

Good luck with the search.

I have a FL2 2.2 diesel, great truck but with only 90k its not been cheap to maintain (could be as its just turned 10yrs old) but still love it. Tows nicely, good off road and a better fuel consumption, about 34mpg on short 3 mile trips and about 40mpg on longer trips.

Agree with using small local garages, was quoted over £1000 for a part inc. labour and a local garage done it for £350.

Every garage I've been too has told me to stay away from Disco 3's..
