ANOMALY..............i use this word to make it sound as if i know what im doing..

drilled out the attatchment holes in the extension bar....................alll on the herr............twice i tell ee...........i used the locating plate to mark out the holes...(got to be spot on)  screwed the bar onto the sight............blah....so checked it again and again...scratched my head............

checked the sight itself.............well blow me ...there is a difference in the hole placement...(see pics)............the sight is a square block of metal that has been milled and drilled...the locating plate holes are slightly mis-alighned so it fits nice for the p14 rifle...........

so i will start again and compensate for the difference...then it will sit square....

Now that's bloody annoying!

Never assume - check.

i have done this 3 bloody times and finally done it....100% spot on....slipped the screws in....fine...so the side plate (elevation) is exactly 90 deg' to the shaft.......when the battery charges up i will take some pics.............cant do anymore until the top and side of the raiser is milled down...........tempted to do it on the linisher........still thinking about that..:hmm:

So good to have you back, looking forward to the pictures:good:

Interesting to see that Alfred Parker created the firm we know as Parker-Hale with the addition of his nephew at the end of the 19th century as a partner and then the official adoption of the name Parker-Hale in 1904.

so is it possible that the sight i have is before 1904.....or is it a seperate company of Parker-Hale ....retaining the old name of Alfred J Parker...:hmm:

i have checked the sight and it has the fittings and are pics of it fitted to a p14..(1914) enfield.....so theres the conumdrum....is the sight pre-1904 and fitted to what ? (as the p14 wasnt invented then)..........so is A J Parker a specialist offshoot of parker hale ?....HHHmmmmm:hmm:

Excellent stuff... Your sight dates from 1953.. The TZ indicates it a twin zero sight and the 3/53 means it's for the Enfield Mk 3 and dated 1953.

Taaa-Daaaaaaaa...............PW strikes again...:yahoo::good:

soooo i thought to myself......whats the point of re-designing the linishing machine...having a new flat bed milled to the nearest 1000"inch.....new bearing blah blah blah..............adjustable table to a 1/4 of a deg...90deg gate

and too frightened to use it on the raiser to mill off the edges....................

so i did...............

the most important thing is

  1. to get the surfaces flat
  2. it has got to be at the right angle..
  3. everything has to be 180deg or 90degs

the only way to ensure that , is to mill.....or ...if you are careful use a flat bed linisher

the sight works thus

  • up and down...(elevation)
  • side to side....(windage)

if these movements arnt "true"...then it makes the placement of the shot unpredictable..............if you set the sight for ...say 15yds....fine....then you wand to shoot a target at 30yds  ..then it should be a few clicks up on the elevation scale...bobs yer uncle.........if the surfaces are not flat the adjustment goes up at an angle then you can see where the problem starts...

I was going to say hacksaw then tidy it up, but too late.

still not sure what all the effort is for but I'm sure it will become clear.

I guess you know that the odd spaced numbers from 2- 10 are hundred yard increments calibrated for the service Mk VII .303 round at 2,440 fps. (might need to re-calibrate for your air rifle)

yes of coarse ..there is a difference ..but the principle is the same............

just dry fitting it know............the top mount i have reduced flat on the linisher...but before i do the side mount i have dry fitted it to see how far out it is on pic3 & 4 you can see it is about 4/5mm to the left which accounts for the mount that has to be cut off...

the back end of the shaft (with the 2 holes) is an aborted try for the sight placement so that needs to be cut off............i will do that next so i can fit the iris and then run a white length of cotton from the top of the foresite thro' the iris and the measure to check and adjust that it is running parralell in both plains to the barrel

it looks all a bit clunky at the moment but that will all be cut / milled and smoothed and blued at the end........

You should easily be able to make up a suitable scale plate once you get it set up and work your ranges out. I know you're a "man who can", there are plenty of youtube clips on salt water/acid etching or a bit of printed circuit board etched away to leave the scale in copper or even printed on your computer then laminated and cut out.

Looking forward to seeing the finished result. Personally I wouldn't use the very fussy aperture with the extra filters etc. they don't go with the sight, either separate screw in simple apertures of varying size or an iris.

have cut the excess off from the back..........taken the diopter /iris off ..disasembled it and threaded a white length of cotton thro' it ....to the foresight....

on pic#4 you can see the whole sight needs to come over.....this will happen when i mill/linish the side mounting back by the same amount ...........the line is parrelell to the barrel...and i will do what 1066 suggests and make a new scale plate for the elevation....(they are detatcherble).........but........i wont mark it up...for the time being i will make it out of brass plate polish it and leave it plain....then i will zero it at 15m...then mark it up...im not sure if the scale will work on the sight (like for like)...but as i said i will leave it plain to begin with..........

this air rifle was fitted with a mid range telescopic scope...which Whitebridges kindly gifted me for in part mending some of his stuff....with it fitted i was getting sub 10mm groups at 30m..so i know the gun shoots well...im looking forward to trying this system out, once i have it bolted and threaded...........

thats all for today....:good:

well ...i just cant stop fiddling about............took the advice of 1066 and made a blank side plate up....so what i will do is zero it on my own scale...........

made it out of brass...squared it up on the linishing machine...drilled filed ...quick polish.......and i think it looks a bit sexy....

I hope that's not rust on the barrel ??

Is it all going to move forward? Think its the position that's throwing me off

yes it is rust..its all over the gun..it dont rust no more as it is aleways oiled...its like a smooth rust...i bought it to fettle it up....i really dont give a toss what guns look like ..all my other guns are lacking in colour ...scratches...bit of rust....BUT...mechanically they are more than perfect..i dont comprimise on that....my AYA#4 looks like a Purdey inside...its slick as snot...outside its dull and boring

dont think the sight will move forward...if you think about it thats more of less where the scope would be....
