sandspider
Hi all As above really. I need to install a fairly short piece of radiator hose in my tractor, and I can't get it on without kinking. It's a 90° bend but over 30cm or so, so not super tight. I don't have any springs. Could I heat it up before installation or something? Wrap tape tightly around the kinking bits? 35mm internal diameter EPDM rubber. Thanks.

Lord Geordie
Stainless steel tube bent to shape with a connecting hose at each end?
sandspider
The hose that I'm replacing was just standard textile backed rubber, so there must have been a way to get it on. And I don't really want to have to buy more hose, and I don't have any stainless steel tube! I just need a way to persuade the rubber not to kink... Dougy
You can't it's made bent during the curing process , so you will be better off buying a piece of the correct angle and diameter.

sandspider
It's an old imported tractor and I can't find the correct piece of hose, not made any more. If I get it reasonably unkinked and start it up, will the expanding coolant push the kink out? Or will the heat make the kink set permanently? figgy
You will have to buy a piece of bent hose to the Diameter you want, if your not willing to just bung the piece you have on with its kinks and hope the pressure is enough to remove the kinks when running. You cant change its properties just because you want to.

Winston72
never tried it with rubber hose , but plastic waste pipe can be filled and tightly packed with sand, heated and form to a 90 degree bend
amateur
Unlikely to work with rubber. AFAIK all the forming has to be done before vulcanisation. However, if you had a plastic pipe of the right, smaller, diameter and shape, you might be able to introduce it into the rubber pipe to act as a former. It would have to be a loose fit to get it in, though Edited June 15, 2018 by amateur
sandspider
Thanks chaps. It's not a straight 90° bend so the silicone joints won't do. Think I've found some rubber with a tighter bend radius though, so that might work...
Wb123
Depending on the diameter required can you use a pipe bender and some copper pipe within the rubber hose to splint the kink?
John_R
You can buy flexible radiator hose, it looks corrugated. There are situations where it is not a good idea due to swirl or cavitation but probably ok for your tractor.
sandspider
Yes, that's what I've ordered thanks. Diameter is too big for copper pipe and I don't have the kit anyway. Tractor doesn't even have a water pump so I doubt cavitation or swirl will be a problem!
figgy
Tractor no radiator, what you a bit a hose for a horse for ?
sandspider
Got a radiator, but it circulates by convection only! A horse might be more reliable at the moment though...
