You can check a Reg number via dvla car check, this will show make and model

Lots of smartphone apps and as Ricko said DVLA.
You can also check MOT and tax status, MID ect, MOT history is pretty useful.
Occasionally , there is inaccuracies, or number fails to go in, pretty rare though.

The reason I ask is a friend of mine was a bit suspicious of a guy near him driving a silver Audi, when he checked on the DVLA website (I have also checked) it came back as a white Ford Fiesta, is this possible?

something wrong there...pass it to the cops

could possibly be a cloned number, I had an issue last year with someone the other side of the country, somewhere i have never visited ....ever.....

had an accident and failed to stop, ......I got a letter from northants police demanding all sorts......untill I informed them that 1) i had never been anywhere near the place and 2) have No intentions of doing so in any case..

the INFO from the plate does if you look it up

however the plate itself does not...... you dont get the make etc ON the plate.....ok , so I misinterpreted what you meant.....I'm far too literal....
