Question on .22lr ammunition.

Recommended Posts

Because of the higher velocity HMR is copper jacketed and the ballistic tip works with the jacket and to protect the metplat, they also help the jacket to fragment on impact.

22lr is slower and therefore predominantly use lead bullets which if not driven fast enough will deform rather than mushroom, hence ricochetting.

Use the same bullets in 22WMR and they very rarely ricochet like lr does.

A ballistic tip in a lead bullet would serve no purpose

I dont think it is the worst, I think that due to quietness and low velocity it is the most commonly heard.

Agreed.

22LR, you can hear the 'thunk/twang', as the bullet strikes the ground 40 yards away, and does ... whatever it's going to do.

HMR, you're still hearing the supersonic crack when the bullet has struck the ground, ricocheted off, and is 200 yards away.
