Flourescent lamps flickering

At the clay shoot we run a number of flourecent lamp fittings from a small generator with more than enough power for the job.

However, the lamps flicker anoyingly.

I wondered if any electrical engineers could suggest a fix for the issue.

Ive had a few ideas, but would like to draw on the experience of others.

How many light fittings / total load and what is the spec of the genny?

If this has been happening from new, and all the lights are affected it would suggest that the genny is sending "dirty" power full of spikes and dips, or perhaps not the correct voltage or both.

You could try adding a normal tungsten floodlight of 500 watts or more to see if that has the effect of damping out any spikes etc.

This also assumes all the wiring is correct and in good nick.
