How reliable are cvt boxes

I had two Honda Jazz CVT's and they were very very good, the first one which was a 2005 model developed a stutter shortly after I got it and after trawling the internet for clues I had the transmission fluid drained and replaced with Honda's "solution" oil and admit to being amazed it totally cured the problem, the second 61 plate was also brilliant.

Most manufacturers have a CVT or "quick shift" type (manual controlled by hydraulic computer change) alternative to standard auto transmissions because they outperform them in fuel consumption, they appear to have their limitations though as I have never seen them in big engine cars, I think Toyota offer a Rav4 1.8 petrol hybrid that does crazy mpg's.

My wife's Subaru Forester ('67 plate) has one and it seems fine. I hate autos but this one is very smooth and doesn't do that silly auto thing of changing just when you don't want it to because it is totally seamless. They also put this gearbox in the reasonably quick 2.5 turbo version so they must think it is strong enough. (Subaru don't use a belt in the 'box but a rather sophisticated steel chain)

I have driven Honda Jazz CVT gearbox cars for twelve years and they have been faultless but it is essential that the gearbox oil is changed every two years or 25K miles using only Honda CVT-F oil.

As has been stated CVT's are used successfully in a variety of cars. Belts were replaced by a chain like device many years ago.

I have loved all the ones I have encountered. I am told many modern 'auto' boxes are actually continuously variable transmissions programmed to make a noise and feel like they have fixed ratios because it makes them sell better (even though it loses a chunk of the efficiency gains inherent in the design).

I hear Audi made one for a while which they put in their larger models but is now sold as a seven speed automatic after altering the control computer to use seven fixed ratios rather than continuously varying.
