Pigeon v game cartridges

Yesterday while game shooting I tried an experiment to see if it is really worth the cost of specialist game cartridges. Both types were Gamebore 32g fibre 6 shot . Over the day it became clear to me that both types shot just as well as each other, I am by no means the best of shots but happy with what I do. So based on what I did yesterday for me it's not worth the extra cost of game cartridges and I will stick to the Clear Pigeon cartridges.

And if you cut those cartridges open to examin the contents I would bet good money that there would be no difference.

Every year as we approach the Game Season cartridge prices and cartridge boxes change to catch those with more money than sense!

I know the bloke that designed gamebore wild game, the original ones were loaded to he's spec, but after that it was more likely they had whatever gamebore had going.

I saw a thread on here once about them and whoever posted it said something along the lines of the batch number on the wild game matched the one for clear pigeon, I'm willing to be in a blind test 99% wouldn't know the difference.

From what he was saying the are a similar cart but the original wild game was loaded with a high bird powder, I know they were loaded in a green case but the newer ones a packaged in a clear pigeon case with different writing. He never mentioned anything about export ,its possible though?

Pigeon and game bird cartridges ?  Explain to me the difference of a woodpigeon in the middle of the pattern and a pheasant or partridge in the middle of the pattern, slightly different size I know.

It's all a load of bunkum.  Sales hype.    Mzl velocity and shot size are the main contributors to good killing power added to well designed wadding.  Fancy boxes with all sorts of promises and an inch and a half of 'brass' have little effect on the result.

Emphasising the middle of the pattern, then the answer - using the BASC figures - is the need for 120 and 60 (catering for the hen) pellets respectively which has nothing to do with the accuracy of the post but simply answers the question.

But not too much MV or the pattern is spoilt!

I have fired enough cartridges at pattern plates , sheets of cardboard , large boxes to realise that every cartridge I fire will have a different pattern. There is just no way to regulate pellets to strike in the same place every time.  The aim is to centre the pattern on the target.  With the proper load, wadding choke it is possible to get a fairly consistent result but a pigeon, partridge, cock pheasant or hen pheasant, woodcock, snipe, crow etc etc., in the middle of that pattern is in trouble if all these different things are in place and as tightchoke says too MUCH power can sometimes blow a pattern, but not always ....always doesn't apply.  I have found over the years that the trick is to find a load which is comforatble to shoot and kills cleanly when you do your job.   Before you change cartridges probably better to seek out a good coach/teacher.   Whatever , let's be honest,  humans always blame their tools, it's in their nature.

I find the recoil softer with my preferred game cartridges, clay loads are particularly harsh in a light SBS game gun! Probably not so noticeable in a 7 1/2lb O/U or a S/A?....are most pigeon/clay type cartridges not of a higher velocity than traditional game loads?

Nope they just tell you they are mostly.

Surely, as we're talking about a scatter gun, it goes without saying that we don't expect to put pellet on pellet shot after shot. Anyone going to a pattern plate expecting to see just that is going to be there for an awful long time A pattern check is designed so that the pellet spread can be checked for a reasonably consistent pellet strike in a given area at a level which meets the required number of strikes for any given sized quarry and reasonably well spread throughout that area with no excessively large gaps. And as ever for a shotgun, any result will be based on an average of the findings.

Two or three years ago i used Black Gold 32g 6s , Fiocchi Sporting PIgeon 6s and Fiocchi F3 game in 6s through the season and the Fiocchi's were easier on the shoulder and killed just as well as the Black Gold and between £75 and over £100 /1000 cheaper, guess what i don't buy now. Also Eley pigeon Select if i can't get Fiocchi's
