I agree that the correct community sentence would be better at reducing crime than very short prison sentences.

If you're caught shoplifting, you should spend a few days sitting in the stocks at your local town centre ,in front of the whole community.

If your caught burgling a house , you should be horse whipped in your local town centre, in front of the whole community.

:good:

Also, if you are awarded community service but previously would have been sent down then the prison time and not the community service should be taken into account if the event of a re-offend.

So after decades of gradually going easier on offenders you get to the point that you you have so many offenders that you cannot cope with the numbers !

...and the answer is to be even more lenient !!!....yeah right.....

We can build more houses because we have (way) too many people, yet we have way too many criminals and the answer is not to build more prisons, but to effectively let them off. Community service? The crims must be laughing their heads off as they burgle our houses.

Community service is not what you think it is. They do have people out picking up litter and painting out graffiti but not many. The H&S and the need for heavy supervision is too great and often the participants are so uncooperative and negative about the whole process they just won't do it.

They can't trust them to go into peoples houses to help the elderly etc so they struggle to find things for them to do

This is a good point it's not as easy to deal with some of this stuff as you might think.

If they are sentenced to 5 years, makes sure they serve 5 years. Instead of letting them out after half the sentence for good behaviour, add another half for bad behaviour.

Thats if they do half, many are let out long before that on tag.
A friend of a friend, a well known smuggler and drug dealer, with a record that would make your jaw drop, got 3 years foer a customs evasion offence, he had absconded to S.A. but they managed to extradite him after 5 years, he served 6 months before he was out on tag.
If prison is no deterrent, then the threat of retribution for crime is pointless.
