USA Shutdown

Spent a lot of time in South Texas, not many Dems down in that area and all of my friends either conceal or open carry at all times.   It is a huge problem and of course a physical barrier is just one aspect of securing the border, but a major preventative measure.  One wonders why Obama found it necessary to build a wall around his home ?  I suppose that's different.

Not many Dems in the south of Texas?

https://www.washingtonpost.com/election-results/texas/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.6fe5596c9d76

In the House race, 4 of the 5 border districts went the way of the Democrats. And the one that didn't was a 49.2-48.7 split

In the Governor race 8 of the 13 border counties went for the Democrat nominee and the smallest margin was 54-46. Presidio went 70-28 for the Dems.

In the Senate race 11 of the 13 border counties went for the Democrat nominee.

Pull up on youtube   ..."Here comes the video Pelosi and Schumer want to hide ...Hannity on Fox."  Lots of fake news on that for you as well.

I'm not clever enough to put a link on but no doubt aomeone could.  Makes interesting watching.

Did you just call Fake News on an entire state's electoral results? That stuff's sort of unequivocal...Even Fox News don't go in for that kind of madness!

Re the wall.

He told everyone that would listen it would be a big beautiful wall and Mexico would pay for it.

Mexico never had any intention of paying for it and joined the rest of the world in mocking him.

He couldn't get it funded under a republican Congress and senate and now he's blaming the democrats.

This shutdown started under a rep majority.

Tarrifs on goods coming in won't hurt anyone but the US public.

Tarrifs on outbound goods will hurt exporters as sales dry up

Yep, I can see where all the winning is happening.

Yeah but it will Make America Great Again, right ? Surely spending billions on a wall that can be beaten with a rope is far better than doing something to help their homeless.

OK, on a simplistic level, how does a wall stop people from climbing over it, digging under it or knocking a hole through it ?

That's a don't know then.

Awesome, the actual election results that Chris posted are fake news?

Just as well that you know a few folk dwn that way and have been a few times to actually let us into the truth.

Absolutely, I don't understand what I'm missing here.

Well, not having one means there's nothing to climb over, dig under, or break through....... so there's a USP straight away😀  Also, they seem to have had some effect during the course of history, otherwise they'd have stopped building them way back when🤭

😳  😂  Even China's Great Wall didn't stop the invaders, for a minute I was expecting to hear something really obvious that I'd missed. If economic migrants are prepared to jump into flimsy dinghies with their families and thrust themselves into dark, turbulent seas I'm reasonably sure a wall will be little more than an opportunity to picnic and catch ones breath.

All it would take is a hole a few yards from the wall whose entrance could easily be camouflaged, it wouldn't surprise me if some traffickers had already dug a few tunnels several hundred yards long in readiness, failing that a stout rope would be even easier.

Which is why the figure of $5bn that the President loves so much is a just the tip of the iceberg. As Hamster points out, walls don't stop anyone. They have  to be guarded, which is going to be billions more.

Do you lock your front door at night ? Why, a burglar could just kick it in.

Do you lock your car ? Why , if they want to get in it theyll smash the glass.

Walls are deterrents , obstacles, and throughout history they have done there job, NOTHING is insurmountable , but with cameras, motion sensors, and guards, you can create a situation that is less enticing.
The Turkey Syria wall is doing its job, especially with a few stories of people shot whilst trying to get over it, but thats something they dont plaster over the 10 pm news is it ?
Walls are largely symbolic, it says loudly, clearly , we dont want you here.
If Trump NEVER  builds the wall, the fact that half of America WANTED TO is a message.

No wall is going to stop migrants, not one that's 2000 miles long anyway. Nowhere near half of Americans want that anyway.

Someone voted for him on that basis, and he won the presidency, so I could easily say that my estimate is accurate.

Maybe not stop them completely, but bottleneck them into certain areas possibly, there are already stretches of fencing and such, if they are ineffective , why bother ?

Like I say, the Turkey/ Syria wall, built in just over a year, ably assisted by EU funds, all 500 miles of it, seems to contain the flow of people , BOTH ways.

Its not about whether or not it works, its  about giving the people what they think they want.

No, not so much. As I said earlier, 2.8 million more people voted for Hilary Clinton than Donald Trump. That was back then. right now, the polls have Trump's approval ratings are dropping (even amongst Conservative polling):

The Ramussen poll usually gives favourable reports for Trump. For taking the country in the right direction, it's at 36%! Across all polls for that question it's at about 35%.

https://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/other/direction_of_country-902.html

Pretty consistently terrible

Likewise for opposition to the wall. NY Times data show that the wall is disapproved of by a strong 10-20pt margin. And the shutdown is making the gap widen more

Pretty sure the Berlin Wall kept people apart for a hell of a lot of time ...

The machine guns, search towers, checkpoints, Stasi operatives and KGB probably had a small amount to do with it too...

They are still smarting big time because Trumpy won and didn't let the Clinton Clan back in the Whitehouse.

Or...we've just manage to find quite a lot of evidence to show that Trump's wall and Trump himself aren't quite as popular with 'The Average American' as the democrat bashing right would have you believe. Got a good view of the wool, have you?

Your not seriously suggesting that a graph in the NYT constitutes as "Quite a lot of evidence" are you?🤣

'Your [sic] not seriously suggesting' I have to go through every one of the posts I've put up in this thread and requote the sources again, are you? 🤣

You could just read up? I made sure it was made up of right and left leaning sources...

To be honest, what I'm suggesting is that the wool you accuse Walker570 of wearing over his eyes, is actually the problem that you appear to be suffering from......

I dont know if you viewed the video I posted above, but it's worth a look; if only to see how someone not blinded by propaganda views the situation in the USA.

We all have different views, and I respect that, but can't help feeling, when reading Snowflake posts, that virtue-signalling is at the forefront🤔
