While I agree with the sentiment, I think thundersnow is a particular phenomenon, rather than a snow storm.

For other nonsense like weather bombs or beast from the east, etc I wholeheartedly agree

Unfortunately, this is apparently more media grabbing than its technical name of 'explosive cyclogenesis'. It's a shame, because the technical name actually tells you what it is - if people bothered with etymology these days!

I'm in Milwaukee at the moment, minus 17, near enough 8 inches of snow and more coming, but ploughs and salt trucks everywhere. Lots of individuals with motorized blowers clearing pavements. If it hits the UK the country will grind to a halt. Hoping our flight home on Wednesday afternoon is not effected, I'm missing my dog Sophie something awful, she'll go ballistic when I get in the house.

Its mad to see the UK grind to a halt when like you say you have that much, but that would happen every year and its - 17 there, we get a day of - 2 and snow then a mold spring day at say +10 to melt it all, then - 2 over night to make it an ice rink. Our weather system makes it hard for us to control and manage the half inch of slush we get each year
