Which rimfire cartridge?

Recommended Posts

I'm playing with the idea of getting a rimfire for squirells , rabbits and the ocasional fox, but haven't got much experience in this field despite shooting center fires and shotguns for more than 20 years.

I need to use the PW wisdom at this point, and ask what do you guys would recommend as a good all rounder rimfire cartridge?

Many thanks!

I use 42gr Winchester’s in my CZ and have no reason to change, nothing has ever complained that they don’t work.

Buy a selection of makes and see what your guns accuracie is like with each make at your desired distance.

I have used Winchester sub's for the past 30+ years, in various rifle's, and have never had a problem.

Just be careful shooting squirrels with a .22. Consider if you miss! a CCI subsonic 960ft/sec 40gn bullet fired at the optimum angle of 25degrees will travel  1590yds and have a terminal energy of 5.5ftlb - OK not going to kill but sure won't aft hurt.

I use CCI CB which is a lighter bullet and lower velocity. 37gn bullet and MV 710ft/sec manages 1133yds and has a terminal energy of 2.2ftlb (only just above a airsoft which is considered non lethal) Still going to hurt!

Generally I like Eley subs.... and don't overstretch the bullet capability.

Thanks gents, i by cartridge i meant caliber to be more specific. Any recommendations?

hello, i would suggest like i have CZ455 22 L/R but take rem 708 advice, always have a good back stop or the lower CCI CBs for tree rats, foxes only at a suitable range, my scope is set at 50/75 yards  MAX

I use nothing but subs in .22lr rifles. will do anything you want to do, and although not ideal for fox just use at close range or use a shotgun if you dont want the ex-pence of a bigger rifle.

I have 3 center fires for fox but still use shotguns various types in a lot of cases, it seems in the uk today its obligatory for foxers to use rifles yet if all you want to do is just kill foxes shotguns with the right loads and sight set up can be very efficient on fox. and use HW19 shot or duplexed with steel ranges can be practical in more cases than you would expect.
