farmer called  and said "the field up the road is getting hammered by hundreds of pigeons"

We all take the hundreds to mean a dozen or so.

Had a run up to said field and it is indeed infested with grey vermin.

Flock of several hundred sat in the small wood/copse in the 100 acre+ field of rape with even more feeding on the ground.

walked them off to see what would happen.

They never came back.

so.....

catch them early morning or later when the come back to roost.

Shot the same small wood a few years ago and between 4 guns we took 263 birds in 2 hours.

pigeons have given it a wide berth until this year.

Yep some of the shot ones had short wave radios 😲

Think life expectancy of a woodie is 3-5 years so it's safe to assume all the original ones associated it with danger are now dead and a new lot have moved in.

Blimey that's a big field for only 4 guns.

Awkward to shoot though.

Bordered by a well used bridle path/ busy B road and the A1M.🙁

Do you not think that parent birds can, and do, teach their offspring where it is a good place to feed and where it is not?? For example, deer in E Europe still keep well clear of where the iron curtain used to be, even though the fences etc have been down for several generations. The parents never went there, so they never took the kids there.

Pigeons are still a creature of habit.

had a few of goes at this field now.

evening. they're not roosting the wood. They prefer the wood in the farm over the road.farmer lets the land out for grazing and doesn't allow shooting.

early morning. They arrive as a "swarm" and disapear en mass after the first shot never to return.

mid day. walk them off and they don't return while you're there (no matter how well your hidden)

Sugested a gas gun is the best option.
