But you might want to look at the engine as it should be reasonably quiet. Is the injection timing and tappets adjusted correctly.

also the other thing to be aware of is interupting the air flow around the enjine....see what clearence you have around the engine before decieding on the thickness........also there are different enjine and gearbox mountings you may want to think about....not expensive but worth it

just because there is soundproofing already there dosnt mean to say it is any good...........sound proofing does differ greatly......

Just resurrecting  this  query.  Your helpful suggestions about " other forms of sound insulation " worked a treat.  I bought a sheet of 1" thick "Class O " foam,  which is self adhesive, and put it on top of the rubber type foam in all the areas, and it is now the most silent diesel Mule I have heard. Thanks everyone.
