The Tories got absolutely slated when they tried to put charges for home care onto people's houses and make people pay for themselves, they lost loads of support with that idea, yet things like social care are enormously expensive and these days peoples' kids don't want to look after their elderly relatives, they expect the council to provide for their every need, an provide a top class service as well. I am fully aware that central government have cut funding for all sorts of local services. I would rather Norfolk had just called it a council pensions surcharge which is what it is. As it goes I don't think anyone would mind paying more for genuine services be they social care, housing or buses. The local charge increase is only about 50p a month plus an extra ‘special expenses’ levy on our area (the only special expenses levy in the town) i read the report that said this rise would allow us to keep the current service provision. The thing that I did notice that annoyed me was the minutes of the previous meeting were the state of the local coffers..... there was an outstanding amount based on unpaid social housing rent in arrears by 4 weeks + currently sitting at 1.4 million!!! But I need to pay a small amount to keep service levels???? also stated was the payment amount needed to move social housing tennants from sub standard accommodation into alternative housing due to the ‘disturbance’ this was averaged at 7k a house hold not including removal expenses and carpeting - with an expected need of 200 moves this year. There are legal ways of avoiding having to pay for a relative's social care, Simply sell their house and put the money offshore where the council can't get their hands on it before the situation becomes critical. Put the aged relative in a top dollar care home, which you pay for out of the offshore funds, then after two years say you can't afford to pay anymore. The council is obliged by law to take over the social care and after the 'client' has been in there two years it becomes their "home" and under human rights law the council can't move them out to somewhere cheaper. There are specialist firms of solicitors in this area who will set it all up for you and deal with the flack from the council. There are hundreds, maybe thousands of old people living very nicely in luxurious care homes under these "arrangements". One care home I have in mind (i'm not going to name it) appears to be in on the deal. (Google Erskin Hall Northwood, not saying its the one but it gives you an idea of the luxury) i I have been there, its like the Ritz. I can't get away with not paying, bigger issues to worry about than bloomin bills, like when will the weather improve so I can get out shooting. Funny how we moan bout things we cant do owt about. When we moved here, our council tax was £60 a month lower than in London. Now it's nearly the same. I'm going to make them work for it this year.
