Dave-G
Its time to replace the original builder fitted kitchen/diner vinyl tiles in our 30 years old semi which has a concrete floor. Looking around various vendors I see ceramic tiles have become very popular but I cannot decide which to go with. Cost looks to be not enough difference to influence the decision if done by myself, purchasing from the likes of B&Q or Wickes etc. I have seen some very nice textured stone affect vinyl's. There is space under our doors for the thicker ceramic types, and the internal doors are soon to replaced anyway. I'm contemplating carrying them on into the consrvatory with them if we choose ceamic - but I'm not sure yet if that affects planning permission which I didn't need as its a floor to ceiling glazed type. I'm thinking to stay with tiles because it saves having to have a gas engineer in twice to disconnect then reconnects the gas cooker I can just draw it out and work around it. Fridge freezer and washer will be occasionally drawn out for cleaning underneath so a fixed covering is needed. I'd appreciate any thoughts or experiences members have found with either - or swapping to either option - or if there are any issues clearing the old tile adhesive from the concrete. Does that mean they need to be disposed of differently? and are there any restrictions on that being done DIY? I noticed most of the new vinyl tiles were self adhesive - I've had a quick google about asbestos in vinyl tiles: Can they just be stuck to the original tiles to save disturbing the old one's in case they have asbestos? Eyefor
For 12 M2 I'd just tour a few tile centres / DIY places / builders merchants and pick up what ceramic tiles you fancy as cheap as possible. I paid 40p a tile for a job lot of 30cm square and 40cm sq porcelanosa tiles to cover 22M2. Alternatively, if you're free tomorrow or Sunday then get to the Home building & renovating show now on at the NEC (not far from east Leicester?) and pick up some show bargains but remember - natural stone needs to be sealed and needs maintenance. Ultrastu
If asbestos tiles Leave them where they are As undisturbed as possible . Thing is with asbestos it really is a fantastic material .water proof .fire proof .insulator etc etc .it just has a bad habbit of being dangerous if you mess about with it .so dont .leave it alone . millrace
Ahh the dreaded double layer vinyl....hated finding this in school mobiles....in them days before all this testing and reports we used to use a blow torch to heat the tiles loosening the glue and peel them up....yes they are now a controlled waste...so proper disposal...but if there sound you can put new over the top...Have even come across floors where they have layexed over them and then fitted ceramic tiles over and they were fine As has been said for the small area all tile shops will have end of range in small amounts which can always be had a rite price.... Saltings
could lay a laminate tile pattern floor over existing floor warmer under foot and not everything that fall on it will break as ceramic tiles

Most of the one's I've seen are self adhesive, and her who has to be pleased has decreed they will be a dark colour because the dog and I tend to forget to wipe our feet from time to time. Konnie
Hi Dave, also be aware that in time the square affect from left down tiles may show through so pick a decent quality (thicker) tile as if ones left down contain asbestos without doubt it will need specialist disposal next time as they will come up with new tiles/vinyl. you could always have a small corner sampled, we do council work and this is the norm, if non asbestos you know what your doing.
