Used Gun market

Recommended Posts

Is the market for second hand guns dead at the moment?

Have been trying to sell a used game gun and auto of a good make for the past couple of months on Guntrader and Gunwatch without any success.

A few time wasters and no hopers but only one genuine response.

Looking at the ads on the forum looks like a lot have zero responses.

Don't really want to take the very poor p/x prices and this would leave me with another to sell as am thinking of packing up completely after all of the nonsense and poor publicity for the sport following the farce with the GL.

Try putting your guns in a sporting auction near you , you can put a sensible reserve on and if they don't sell it would only cost you the entry fee .

I went to our our last one in March and the majority of the guns made good money , I would had been happy if one or two of them would have been mine at what they ended up making .

GOOD LUCK

Have you tried seeing if a dealer (gun-shop) will take them on a commision sale basis ?  A couple of my fairly local shops will take a gun in, agree a selling price with you & take a commision. typically between 10 to 15%, which is better than the sellers commision at the better auction houses. It puts additional stock on their racks without having the investment of parting with cash for an outright sale.

You dont say what type of game gun you are selling, but my experience around here is that side x side game guns in the lower to middle end of the marked are not moving unless they are an absolute bargin. At the higher end, English sidelocks will sell if the price is right but buyers of top end guns are very aware of the pitfalls nowadays, so if a gun has short barrels, poor wall thickness or has been sleeved it will be sitting around till doomsday. If you look at the two online sites you mentioned, the country seems to be awash with secondhand shotguns, I would suggest that the for sale ads outweigh the number of buyers by some considerable margin.

In addition, have a scroll through the trade ads on this forum. Only a very small percentage even get a reply or an enquiry. The sole exception seems to be `wabbitbosher` who obviously only buys in at the right price and manages to turn over his stock because his price is right.

Having tried to sell a game gun in the past, I was told that you generally get more success nearer the start of the shooting seasons. Out of season, people are less inclined to be buying.

I don't know what you are selling, but if it is a SxS, the market for them is certainly slow anyway.

Tell us what you've got!

Agree with this. Put a very good top end side lock SxS with a specialist dealer and it went in four weeks. It depends what you have, how realistically you price it and who you put it with. Commission was 10% + VAT so better than auction house.

good luck

That sounds like I can stop putting my picking-up money away in a pot. Been saving that towards a Holland & Holland Royal !!

Another cunning plan bites the dust.

Don`t worry, you can pick an H&H Royal or even a pair of Badmintons for £12000 on Guntrader. That`s only about 600 days picking up :hmm:

Trouble is, at an average (for me) of 17 or 18 days paid picking-up per season, that would take around 33 years !

I suppose I could look around for another commercial shoot to increase my savings pot; that would reduce the wait to 16 years ! I will probably be on a mobility scooter by then. Be nice to look at and admire, but arguably I wouldnt shoot any better; so best stick with the faithful old AYA.

Afraid so and interestingly saved me a bit on my insurance having the thing covered. Frankly you can get a good provincial side lock now for 3-5k so you might get there before you turn your toes up😁

True, but I have a very tidy Charles Hellis that I have had for about 12 years; there is a photo on the SxS club shortly after it was pinned. But its reserved for `posh` days and the occasional invite to a Partridge day. If the AYA No:1 got a ding or a scratch, I wouldnt burst into tears, but I would if I had splashed out the kids inheritance on something in the £12 to 15k bracket. 😥

AYA no 1 is a more than respectable gun to be using anywhere!

I would try it on the for sale section of this website first but be realistic when you price it up, you only have to scroll through the guns for sale very very few sell.

Tried  that and Gunwatch but got a couple of daft offers or folk wanting me to send them to an RFD miles away to be looked at with no certainty of purchase.

Looks like miserly low px is the only route.

Looks like it, seen loads of new guns at clay grounds recently. So there is a market for some guns.

Anything that is well priced will sell.

What you may consider a “daft offer” someone else may consider a fair offer.

Have seen lots of people pricing guns on various sites well above what they sell for.

What gun is it and what price do you want?

Look up what they have sold for.

You could always hang on until packam and corbyn ban those double barrel shotguns and hope the governments compensation payment covers your loss

Rather than go that route i would either just keep them, or bang them in an auction. With the auction you get what the market is for them, Minus the Fee.  Gun trade wont pay money it has not done for years. PX moves them quick but why the rush.

I just last weekend sold two old shotguns a Nikko 5000 skeet and a Winchester 101 waterfowl ( Winchoke) both were in good clean condition i got what i consider good money for them, so people are still buying guns its just meeting the right people. These two guns went just word of mouth. the waterfowl i had no wories about moving but the nikko 5000  i thought i had that forever it just goes to show buyers are out there.  Down to 7 shotguns now five rifles i do not need anything else.

Have ben trying to sell them since the end of the season, no rush just want rid of them - may be moving soon and don't want to be bothered with all the hassle of installing a safe in the new house.

I do not want to cause alarm but in the current English gun market I would very much doubt any Hellis gun would realize the value you have on your gun .I say this after talking to a couple of dealers last week who in the past have sold large numbers of English guns .

Auction is your best option if you want to move them quick, trade is a waste of time you might get lucky if you tote them around the country but 1, its highly unlikely and 2. you will burn off any money made in time/ fuel running them about.   I moved these last two guns of mine thankfully  by word of mouth, but guess you have tried all this, its Auction way i think your best option lays.

Thanks, but I have no intention of selling, and I have followed the trend on British side x sides, so under no illusions that it is worth twice as much as I paid for it. However, to confirm your conversations with a couple of dealers; I have a friend who purchased a cased pair of Holland Royales 12 or 15 years ago for circa £24k at auction. He is now trying to sell them. To his horror most of the better known dealers are just not interested and the sole offer on the table at present is £9k. £4500 each for a Royale, thats outrageous !!!

Almost makes me want to raid the ISA and treat myself. Sad days for sellers of British SxS.
