Bike advice - help!

I'm after a new bike. I'm thinking of going down the cyclocross route as I want something that'll be a little more road like in feel when on the road, but my partner's pretty nervous on the road and prefers the easy trails you get in National parks. The thing is I'm a bit of a novice as to what to look for, in particular the groupsets. My current bike (Specialized Sirrus Elite) has Soras and they feel a bit clunky, but I'm not sure where to look beyond that? 105? Ultegra? what's the difference between 105 R7000 and 105 5800??

What are the next stages up? looking to spend up to a max of £1000 but really, preferably lower than that. Any advice from anyone would be much appreciated

Wait until the new models come out and shops that have the old models (old by a few weeks only) will give big discounts.

Think my bike was £900 new and paid about £600 as a week into the new model. This was a road bike though.

I have found one that's already got £450 off it, but it's online, so I can't try it out first! The frame is the right size for me (I'm 5'9/10 and it's a 52, but it should fit), it's just I want to see whether it's worth getting first. It's got a shimano 105 groupset as opposed to the Soras on my current bike, and mechanical discs as opposed to hydraulics.

A bit like guns, you can go as high end as you like. Some can get silly. My mate was looking at a £5,000 carbon bike but would regularly do 100+ mile rides.

I don’t know enough to advise which is best - plenty of bike forums / groups on FB that are worth looking into and YouTube also very good for a look.

Always get reviews off people who actually use them not idiots paid to say how great they are 👍🏻

you won't go far wrong with shimano, but i wouldn't go spending big money, by that i mean more than a few hundred, not worth it unless you know what need and are doing lots of miles.

look at second hand, big place near us buy a bike does second hand, trade ins. Few of the specialist shops nearby the wheels cost more than my bike!!

car boots are worth a look, Some work places do bike to work scheme, and the offers Halfords do can be very good.

Hi,

www.paulscycles.co.uk is worth a look, they specialise in last years models, in August / September 2019 a “2019” bike will be “last year’s” as the 2020 bikes will be hitting the shops.

Sometimes just the colour of the bike changes. I’ve had one bike off them, a mate has had two and saved lots....brand new bike but last years.

Because they are mostly online they post you a bike part built, so you or someone needs to be ok with final assembly. A torque wrench is a good idea as lots of threads need enough but not too much.

Good riding 👍🏻
